AHMEDABAD, India - Redlio Labs, a software development company that has designed, built and grown software for mid-size and large organizations since 2014, has published "Custom Software Development Cost in 2026", a guide for companies budgeting a new system or comparing vendor quotes.

The guide starts from a simple position: custom software development cost is set by scope, not by a market rate. Two vendors can quote very different prices for what looks like the same project because they are pricing different assumptions about users, integrations, data and support.

What the 2026 numbers show

Using Clutch's 2026 pricing data, the guide reports that a typical custom software project costs between 10,000 and 49,000 US dollars, while the average is 132,480 US dollars. The average is pulled up by a small number of very large projects, so it is a poor guide for most budgets. The average Clutch project ran about 13 months.

Hourly rates vary sharply by region. Clutch's data puts the average software development company at 25 to 49 US dollars per hour. Companies in India, the Philippines, Ukraine, Spain and Mexico typically fall in that band, the United States and Poland average 50 to 99 dollars, and Canada and Australia 100 to 149 dollars. For comparison, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of 64.44 dollars per hour for in-house developers, QA analysts and testers combined, before benefits and overhead.

Why quotes differ so much

The guide draws on research by the Simula Research Laboratory, in which 46 companies estimated the same five systems. For each system, the highest estimate was between 14 and 64 times the lowest. Research reviewed in the guide also finds that software projects overrun their effort estimates by around 30 percent on average.

"The lowest quote is the one most likely to be an underestimate, because bidding rewards optimism," says Mayursinh Jadeja, Founder of Redlio Labs and author of the guide. "Buyers get better numbers when they write down the scope first: who uses the system, what it connects to, what data moves across, and who looks after it after launch."

Seven factors that drive cost

The guide lists the factors that move a budget most: the number of users and workflows, integrations (each treated as its own small project), data migration, security and uptime requirements, the platforms covered, exclusions that are often left unstated, and support and ownership after launch.

The guide is written by a software vendor, which it discloses, and every figure is linked to its primary source so readers can check it.
