The first Nancy Drew mystery returns as it was actually written in 1930, with a new introduction and an essay on the woman who wrote it

NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2026, The book that started one of the most durable series in children's literature has been published in the form its first readers knew. The Secret of the Old Clock: The Original 1930 Text, Restored (Companion Classics) presents Carolyn Keene's complete 1930 novel, all twenty-five chapters, proofed against two independent copies of the 1930 printing, with Russell H. Tandy's original 1930 illustrations, including the frontispiece that later printings redrew. Editor Horace Harriott Jr. adds an introduction, an essay on the book's actual author, a note on the period attitudes preserved unaltered in the text, and an appendix setting out what the famous revision changed.

In 1959, The Secret of the Old Clock was quietly rewritten: twenty-five chapters were cut to twenty, Nancy was aged from sixteen to eighteen, her roadster was traded for a convertible, and the 1930 world she moved through, its language, its attitudes, its rough edges, was smoothed away. The revised version is the only one that has been in print ever since. This edition restores the original.

The companion material tells the story around the story. "The Woman Who Was Carolyn Keene" profiles Mildred Wirt Benson, the Iowa journalist who wrote this book, and twenty-three of the first thirty Nancy Drew volumes, for a flat fee of $125 and no royalties. The appendix, "What Changed in 1959," lets readers compare the two versions of Nancy for themselves, and a period-context note addresses the attitudes of the 1930 text plainly, with the text itself left unaltered.

Alongside the book, the Nancy Drew, The Secret of the Old Clock Book Club Kit offers the edition's discussion material as a printable PDF, with chapter-by-chapter and whole-book questions arranged for group reading. The kit is available for $7 through the editor's Payhip store: https://payhip.com/b/MtPZ3

The Secret of the Old Clock: The Original 1930 Text, Restored is available now as an eBook ($9.99) through Payhip: https://payhip.com/b/ZM2z3, paperback and hardcover print editions follow on Amazon. The novel's 1930 text and Tandy's illustrations are in the U.S. public domain; all companion material is original to this edition. This is an independent restoration of a public-domain work. Not published, authorized, or endorsed by Simon & Schuster, Inc. NANCY DREW is a registered trademark of Simon & Schuster, Inc., used here only to identify the 1930 work.
