"The Mystery at Lilac Inn: The Original 1930 Text, Restored" Rescues the One Early Nancy Drew the Revisions Erased Entirely
The 1961 Lilac Inn was a different novel under the same title, the 1930 original is back in print for the first time in over sixty years
NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2026, Of all the early Nancy Drew books, The Mystery at Lilac Inn is the one that disappeared completely, and it has now been published in its original form. The Mystery at Lilac Inn: The Original 1930 Text, Restored (Companion Classics) presents the complete 1930 novel, all twenty-five chapters, collated against two independent printings of the original text, with which it agrees completely, with Russell H. Tandy's four original 1930 illustrations. Editor Horace Harriott Jr. adds an introduction, an essay on the book's author, a note on the period text, and an appendix setting out what the replacement changed, and why, this time, there is no chapter mapping to draw.
Published in 1930, the year the series began, The Mystery at Lilac Inn was Nancy's fourth case and the series' first sequel. Nancy stops for lunch at Lilac Inn and reunites with her classmate Emily Crandall, who is turning eighteen and about to inherit the famous Crandall jewels, forty thousand dollars' worth, mostly diamonds, from her guardian, Mrs. Jane Willoughby. That night the handbag holding the jewels vanishes, and suspicion falls on the guardian who was carrying it, while the real thief, a temporary housekeeper Nancy has just hired into her own home, works with her brother and a riverman to move the stones. Nancy overhears them, is captured, and is taken downriver bound and gagged, and left below decks, still tied, as the boat begins to sink.
When the series was modernized in 1961, the first three books were cut and reworked; this one was replaced. Published summaries of the 1961 Lilac Inn describe a different novel under the same title, Emily renamed, a Nancy impersonator, a haunted grove, scuba diving, a damaged submarine, and the collector record notes that the revisions carried over original text from every book with the exception of this one. Not one scene of the 1930 story survived. This edition brings it back: Nancy is sixteen again, in the blue roadster she still drives.
