NEW YORK, Oct. 31, 2026, In 1894, Macmillan of London published a story collection built like no other: seven tales, each answered by a song. Three of the tales follow Mowgli, the man's cub raised by the Seeonee wolf pack; the other four carry the reader to the Bering Sea seal beaches, a bungalow garden in a military cantonment, the elephant-catching camps of Assam, and a night of rain in an army camp at Rawal Pindi. Rudyard Kipling's *The Jungle Book* made its twenty-eight-year-old author the defining voice of his generation's childhood, and it has never left it since. A new Companion Classics edition, The Jungle Book, The Companion Edition, presents the complete book, 50,746 words, all seven tales with their seven songs, in first-edition order, unabridged, in the text of the 1894 first edition, taken from Project Gutenberg eBook #236 and collated against an Internet Archive scan of the 1894 Macmillan printing (located-unit token agreement 0.875-0.977; an 84-probe test across all fourteen units matched at 90.5%, every miss resolving to scan noise). The collation restored one reading later editions changed: the closing tale appears under its 1894 chapter-head title, *Servants of the Queen*.

The tales need no selling: a cub claimed at the Council Rock in the teeth of a lame tiger's demand; a boy stolen by the Monkey People and rescued by a bear, a panther, and a thirty-foot python; a white seal who spends his life looking for a shore where men never come; a mongoose fighting two cobras for a family's breakfast table; a ten-year-old elephant-driver waiting for the one sight nobody can promise him; and, to close, the beasts of an army camp arguing in the rain about fear and obedience. What this edition adds is the architecture made visible, tale and song, prose and answer, presented as the single building Kipling designed.

Around the book, the companion material, all of it original to this edition, includes an introduction on that architecture and on the Mowgli tales' seriousness, a jungle that runs not on whimsy but on law; a Who's Who of the jungle, the sea, the garden, and the camp; four explainers, covering the Law of the Jungle as a working legal code, Kipling's India (addressed honestly for family readers, whose questions about empire the edition answers rather than evades), the real animals behind the storied ones, the White Seal's sealing-trade facts were documentary in 1894 and remain so, and the songs, including why Kipling gives his villains, the Bandar-log, the catchiest tune in the book; a short life of Rudyard Kipling; a reading schedule in four meetings with a family read-aloud track; and thirty discussion questions, spoiler-fenced by meeting, so no tale's ending is given away before its evening comes.

Alongside the book, The Jungle Book, Book Club Kit offers the edition's discussion material as a printable PDF (26 pages, US Letter) for book clubs and families reading together: the four-meeting plan and family read-together track, the Who's Who and explainers in full, all thirty discussion questions arranged by meeting, and the Law of the Jungle Tracker & the Red Flower Journal, a running log of every time the Law is invoked, and one journal page a meeting for what crosses the border between the jungle's world and men's. The kit is available for $7 through the editor's Payhip store: https://payhip.com/horaceharriottjr

The Jungle Book, The Companion Edition is available now as an eBook ($9.99) through Payhip: https://payhip.com/horaceharriottjr, and in The Classics and Companions Shop on the editor's Linktree. Print editions follow on Amazon (paperback, $14.99; hardcover, $24.99). The text is public domain in the United States and in life+70 countries (Rudyard Kipling died in 1936; the life+70 term expired in 2006, and this edition carries no territory restriction). The 1894 edition's illustrations by J. L. Kipling, W. H. Drake, and P. Frenzeny are not reproduced in this edition, the surviving scan of the witness renders its plates as illegible bitonal images, and the edition claims no illustrations it does not contain; its cover is an original painting made for this edition, and no art from any film adaptation is used anywhere in it. This is an independent publication, not affiliated with or endorsed by any film adaptation.
