"The Call of the Wild, The Companion Edition" Presents London's Complete 1903 Text, with Explainers on the Klondike and the Sled Dog's Working Life and Discussion Questions Fenced Until Buck's Final Choice

The 1903 first edition, collated against a scan of the Macmillan printing, with the 1903 frontispiece reproduced and an introduction on the stolen dog who became American literature's most famous animal narrator

NEW YORK, Oct. 31, 2026, In July 1903, The Macmillan Company of New York published a short novel about a stolen dog, written by a twenty-seven-year-old former Klondike stampeder who had come home from the Yukon with scurvy and no gold. Jack London's *The Call of the Wild*, serialized in *The Saturday Evening Post* that same summer, made its author famous, and it has never been out of print since. A new Companion Classics edition, The Call of the Wild, The Companion Edition, presents the complete novella, 31,716 words, all seven chapters, unabridged, in the text of the 1903 first edition, taken from Project Gutenberg eBook #215 and collated against an Internet Archive scan of the 1903 Macmillan printing (all seven chapters located in the scan; token agreement 0.939-0.968; a 42-probe test across all seven chapters matched at 88.1%, every miss resolving to scan noise).

The story itself needs no selling: Buck, a hundred-and-forty-pound St. Bernard-shepherd cross living as a pampered house dog in California's Santa Clara Valley, is stolen to feed the Klondike trade in strong dogs, beaten into the law of club and fang, broken to harness on the Dawson mail trails, and remade, by work, by rivalry, by exhaustion, and at last by the love of one man, into something the book's final chapter must be read to name. London, who wintered in the Yukon in 1897-98, writes the sled dog's working life from the inside: the fan hitch, the order of the team, the arithmetic of rations on a forty-mile day.

Companion Material

Around the novella, the companion material, all of it original to this edition, includes an introduction on the book's two engines, observed Yukon fact and the period's science of heredity and ancestral memory; a Who's Who of eleven entries, from Judge Miller's estate to Thornton's camp; four explainers, covering the Klondike gold rush and Buck's road north, the sled dog's working life, London's naturalism and the "dominant primordial beast," and an honest account of the peoples of the book; a short life of Jack London; a reading schedule in four meetings; twenty-nine discussion questions, spoiler-fenced by meeting, so that Buck's final choice stays unspoken until the last chapter; and a period note that addresses the book's violence and its period attitudes plainly. The 1903 edition's frontispiece, by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull, is reproduced from the witness scan; the edition's other plates are not reproduced, and the edition claims no illustrations it does not contain.

Book Club Kit and Availability

Alongside the book, The Call of the Wild, Book Club Kit offers the edition's discussion material as a printable PDF (26 pages, US Letter) for book clubs and reading groups: the four-meeting plan, the Who's Who and explainers in full, all twenty-nine discussion questions arranged by meeting, and Buck's Journey, a Klondike route-map worksheet, one leg of Buck's road drawn per meeting, from Santa Clara to Dawson and beyond. The kit is available for $7 through the editor's Payhip store: https://payhip.com/horaceharriottjr

The Call of the Wild, The Companion Edition is available now as an eBook ($9.99) through Payhip: https://payhip.com/horaceharriottjr, and in The Classics and Companions Shop on the editor's Linktree. Print editions follow on Amazon (paperback, $14.99; hardcover, $24.99). The text is public domain in the United States and in life+70 countries (Jack London died in 1916); there is no territory restriction. The cover is an original painting made for this edition. This is an independent publication, not affiliated with or endorsed by any film adaptation.
