The Bronx Has No Radio Station of Its Own, Five-Borough Census Published
Concrete Jungle Radio publishes a census finding no full-power station is licensed to the Bronx, naming itself as the only Bronx-based, community-owned 24-hour bilingual station.
THE BRONX HAS NO RADIO STATION OF ITS OWN, A NEW FIVE-BOROUGH CENSUS PROVES IT, AND ONE STATION HAS TAKEN THE EMPTY SEAT
BRONX, NY, Concrete Jungle Radio today published The Bronx Radio Landscape, the first public census of radio across New York City's five boroughs, 99 licensed stations, plus a separate sweep of roughly 110 internet-only stations, each checked for where it is actually based, who owns it, what language it speaks, and whom it serves. The full report is published in the open at concretejungleradio.com/landscape.
The census finds:
- No full-power radio station is licensed to the Bronx, not one.
- The Bronx has no low-power FM station; the entire city has three.
- Every major Spanish-language station in the market broadcasts from Manhattan studios under national corporate ownership.
- Caribbean radio has had no licensed full-power home since 2023.
- In the internet tier, the census's own tier, checked hardest, no other station combines Bronx-based, community-owned, broadcasting around the clock, in English and in Spanish.
"For all the money this market charges its listeners and advertisers, there was not one community-owned station at the table," said Arthur Brown, founder and program director of Concrete Jungle Radio. "Not one voice that answers to the neighborhood it serves. The people of the Bronx deserve to see the whole board, who owns the air they hear, and who has been missing from it. The seat was empty. It isn't anymore."
Concrete Jungle Radio is Bronx-based and community-owned, on the air 24 hours a day in English and Spanish, with a 12-voice on-air cast, a public resource desk of 47 verified community listings, Saturday-morning children's programming, and an English-teaching segment for Spanish-speaking elders now in production. The station has sent the report to the leadership of the market's major station owners, including iHeartMedia, Spanish Broadcasting System, TelevisaUnivision, Emmis, MediaCo, Red Apple Media, and Educational Media Foundation, inviting correction of any figure in the report, in the open, and commits to correcting any error the same way it was published.
The full census, including its sources, method, and an explicit account of what could not be verified, is at concretejungleradio.com/landscape.
