FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNITED KINGDOM - "Shadow of a Survivor" by John Walker Pattison speaks to cancer patients and caregivers alike. It is among those cancer patients' "must-read" stories that offers comfort without false promises. It also stands as an inspirational book for those who are searching for meaning in suffering.

Because, when time after time, cancer tested John - and his family - he always found a way to move forward in hope - never deadened to the trauma and pain but also open to life and all the richness it has to offer.

Synopsis

At just eighteen, John received a devastating diagnosis: cancer. The prognosis was grim: "You will not survive." What followed was an agonising battle through the depths of failed treatments, where hope flickered like a distant light.

Eight years after defying the odds, life delivered another cruel twist - his four-year-old daughter was diagnosed with terminal leukaemia.

John's journey is one of extraordinary resilience. Yet, he returned to the very hospital that once held his fate - this time as a senior cancer nurse specialist, dedicating his life to those walking the same path.

From appearing on rock festival stages to visiting the sacred lands of the Lakota Sioux Nation, his life is a testament to survival, transformation, and the unbreakable human spirit.

Now, fifty-one years on, he is honoured to be one of the world's longest cancer survivors. His memoir, "Shadow of a Survivor," is an award-winning chronicle of perseverance, faith, and the profound power of the human will.

Less than a decade after his own unexpected recovery, John faced another devastating chapter when his four-year-old daughter was diagnosed with terminal leukaemia. For any parent, it is an unimaginable heartbreak, but for John, it became another profound test of strength, love, and resilience.

Through the pain and uncertainty, he remained a pillar of courage for his family, drawing upon the same determination that had carried him through his battle with cancer. His unwavering devotion to his daughter and his refusal to surrender to despair revealed the true depth of his character and further inspired all those who learned of his story.

John Pattison's writing blends hard-earned experience with deep compassion, offering hope to those facing life's toughest battles. His journey is a testament to survival and spirit, and the quiet power of endurance.

Life has confronted him with many extraordinarily difficult experiences, and yet John has found ways of not only coping but expanding his heart and his capacity to hope, through even the most testing times.

The music of Hawkwind provided solace during the dark days of the seventies, and in 2007, he not only joined the band as part of the backstage crew but also played on stage with them at Donnington Festival.

More significantly, he found solace throughout his cancer journey in the history and spirituality of the Lakota Sioux Nation. In 2018, he spent time on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation with the indigenous people of South Dakota, the people who, unknowingly, supported him through his life's greatest challenge: cancer.

Reviews for "Shadow of a Survivor" have been nothing short of glowing. A small selection of the five-star praise on Amazon can be found below:

"Packed with raw emotion and honesty. It has to be read by anyone facing a cancer diagnosis, or indeed, any other life trauma. And, despite its serious message, it also incorporates humour. He was a cancer patient, father of a little girl with cancer, a cancer nurse… believe it or not, this is a true story - and it blew me away."

"A beautiful testament to courage and resilience that inspires us all. The author shares his personal story as a testament to perseverance, showing that even after life's unexpected setbacks, he fought on for his loved ones. I highly recommend reading this book or sharing it with someone going through a tough time, you might just save a life."

"Shadow of a Survivor" is a remarkable story that breaks your heart, and mends it in the same breath. The book is available now in Kindle, Hardcover and Paperback editions.

About the Author

John Walker Pattison was born 1957 in the wonderful seaside town of South Shields. In 1973, he started work in a local shipyard until the spectre of cancer gripped him in a deathly stranglehold and sculptured his future. Last year, Pattison published his memoir, "Shadow of a Survivor'" to great acclaim. He retired from his post as a senior clinical nurse specialist in haematology at his local hospital- this being the same hospital that established his cancer diagnosis over fifty-one years earlier. Today, John is one of the longest cancer survivors in the world.

John has written dozens of articles for national and international nursing and medical press. He has delivered lectures across the country on many aspects of haematology and cancer management. He is honoured to have won numerous awards both locally and nationally for his work in haematology and oncology. However, Pattison knows that being one of the longest cancer survivors is his greatest achievement.

Outside his work he enjoys photography and supporting his beloved Newcastle United. Pattison also enjoys the solitude and escapism of fly-fishing, but there is nothing he cherishes more than travelling to secluded and undiscovered areas of America with his soul mate, his wife June.
