Ranked: the best street food cities in the world

A new study by Radical Storage has ranked the street food capitals of the world, to uncover which city provides the best taste of its culture.

Paris has been crowned the street food capital of the world.

The study ranked cities across a number of categories including the total number of street food eateries per square kilometre, average ratings, the number of establishments with ratings of four stars or higher, price range, and the variety of cuisines and dietary options available across the city, providing scores out of 10 for each category.

The French capital achieved an impressive score of 7.2 out of 10, outranking cities like Tokyo, Mexico City and Bangkok.

The world's highest ranking street food destinations

Top ten best street food cities in the world

  1. Paris - Score 7.2
  2. Athens - Score 6.9
  3. Thessaloniki - Score 6.1
  4. Barcelona - Score 5.9
  5. London - Score 5.4

The study found that 69.1% of the 401 street food eateries (3.82 per kilometre square) in Paris are rated four stars or more. From croissants and coq au vin, to escargot and macarons, Paris is a firm favourite for food-loving explorers.

Following closely behind is Athens, Greece, scoring 6.9 out of 10, scoring highly in the number of cuisines on offer (29 different types) as well as the number of vendors per square metre (4.21).

Best cities for highly rated street food

Despite Paris ranking first overall, stripping everything back to quality ratings alone tells a different story.

Top 5 cities with highest volume of four-star and above ratings:

  1. Rhodes, Greece - 83%
  2. Florence, Italy - 82.7%
  3. Edinburgh, United Kingdom - 81.3%
  4. Palma de Mallorca, Spain - 77.8%
  5. Heraklion, Greece - 77.4%

Rhodes and Florence take the top two spots at 83% and 82.7% respectively. In fact Greece and Italy dominate the table and account for four of the overall top 10 places between them.

Edinburgh is the sole UK representative at 3rd, while Palma de Mallorca, Spain and Heraklion, Greece round out a strong top five.

Cities with the most budget-friendly street food

For the budget-conscious traveller, street food is a staple dietary requirement. To identify the cities where travellers can enjoy the most budget-friendly street food, the study looked at the proportion of street food vendors in each city that fell within the lowest price category.

Top 5 budget-friendly street food capitals:

  1. Athens, Greece - 81.5%
  2. Heraklion, Greece - 81%
  3. Krakow, Poland - 78.6%
  4. Thessaloniki, Greece - 77.1%
  5. Marrakesh, Morocco - 76.2%

Greece dominates the table more than any other country, placing three cities in the top 5. Athens leads the way with 81.5% of its vendors falling into the budget-friendly category, followed closely by Heraklion at 81% and Thessaloniki at 77.1%, with Rhodes also making the top 10 at 73.2%. For travellers looking to eat well without spending much, Greece makes a compelling case.

Krakow, Poland is the standout European entry outside of Greece at 3rd with 78.6%, while Marrakesh represents Africa at 5th with 76.2%.

Best cities for vegetarian and vegan street food

For plant-based travellers, Edinburgh, Scotland and Florence, Italy are the standout destinations with 52.1% and 46.2% of their street food vendors offering vegetarian or vegan options respectively, the highest proportion of any cities in the study with 30 vendors or more.

Amsterdam follows at 41.8% and Rome at 39.2%, while London leads on sheer volume with 99 vendors catering to plant-based diets. Barcelona and Budapest also perform strongly, reflecting a growing shift towards vegetarian and vegan options across European street food scenes.

Methodology

Radical Storage analysed 6,897 street food eateries across the world's top 100 most visited cities, alongside comparing the number of four stars and more rated vendors, cuisine options, dietary requirements and price ranges on offer.

The study was conducted in April 2026, an update from the previous study in 2023.

'Street food', was classified as food stalls, trucks, or sit-in vendors that serve street food.

Cities with fewer than 30 vendors were excluded from sub-category rankings to ensure statistical reliability.

To ensure a fair comparison across cities of varying sizes, all metrics were adjusted to account for city area in km², meaning a compact city with a dense street food scene is measured on the same level playing field as a sprawling metropolis with more vendors overall.
