Pier 0.3.1 mounts Nextcloud, NAS and SFTP storage as a real drive letter in Windows
iMobile's Windows program Pier maps WebDAV, SFTP and NFS storage to a drive letter, reads files in blocks into a local cache and keeps working offline.
Pier 0.3.1 is a Windows program that turns remote storage into an ordinary drive with its own letter. It supports WebDAV (for example Nextcloud, ownCloud, Synology and QNAP), SFTP servers with a password or an SSH key, and NFSv3 shares. File Explorer, Office applications, backup tools and scripts use the drive just like a local disk.
The WebDAV client built into Windows has well-known limits: Basic authentication works only over HTTPS by default, files are capped at about 50 MB, and the drive disappears when the connection drops. Sync clients, on the other hand, download whole folders even when only a few files are needed.
Pier takes a different approach. Files are read in blocks into a cache on the local disk, so only the parts that are actually opened travel over the network. Interrupted uploads and downloads resume from the last block. When Wi-Fi drops or a VPN reconnects, Pier re-dials on its own and writes pending changes. A drive can be switched to offline mode and keep working from the cache; changes are journaled and sent later.
Before the first mount, Pier checks which features the server supports (writing, renaming, timestamps, case sensitivity, resume) and sets up the drive accordingly. The program runs as a Windows service, so the drives are available to every user and survive restarts. Pier Backup, included, makes encrypted, versioned backups of folders to WebDAV, SFTP, S3 or NFS. The interface is available in 16 languages.
Pier runs on Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) and Windows Server 2019 or later. The free edition mounts up to five drives with no time limit; the Pro edition without a drive limit costs USD 19 per year.
