New reference site counts every public limited company on the UK register

Domain Farm Ltd has launched a reference site answering a question that had no published answer: how many public limited companies are there in the United Kingdom?

Counted from the Companies House register, there are 4,506 public limited companies, of which 3,793 are not in liquidation.

The number is not difficult to establish, but nobody had published it. Figures quoted in commentary and in academic work tend to be either estimates, out of date, or counts of listed companies, which is a different and much smaller population. A PLC does not have to be listed, and most are not.

The site publishes the full list, free to download, alongside the method used to produce it. It also records the long decline in the number of PLCs over the past decade, which is visible in the register and had not previously been set out.
