Nordic, Finnish, woman-led and built without investors: Saaren Taika backs its skincare with eight independent clinical studies

Perniö, Finland - New Nordic cuisine taught the world that a small northern kitchen can set the standard. Saaren Taika, a woman-led, three-generation family skincare company from Finland, is doing the same for sensitive skin. It has tested seven of its finished products in eight clinical studies under dermatologist supervision, covering the skin concerns people struggle with most: rosacea-prone redness, acne-prone skin, a psoriasis-prone scalp, dryness and itching, signs of ageing, and dark circles.

Saaren Taika tests the finished product, the exact formula that goes into the jar, not only the properties of its ingredients. The studies are run at independent laboratories including Eurofins and Dermaclaim. Full study reports are available to journalists on request.

Measured results, product by product

Redness Relief Serum, rosacea-prone skin, 32 participants, 42 days: 57% less visible redness on average, 27% fewer inflammatory lesions in the acne rosacea group, 34% more even skin tone.

Sea Buckthorn Soap, rosacea-prone skin, 21 participants, 28 days: 52% less redness on average, seen in 95% of participants, and 80% less itching.

Tea Tree Soap, acne-prone skin, 22 participants, 28 days: 58% fewer lesions in total, 67% fewer inflammatory lesions and 82% fewer pustules on average. A second study showed the soap preserves the skin microbiome.

Chamomile 2 in 1 Shampoo Bar, psoriasis-prone scalp, 20 participants, 28 days: 52% less rash, 65% less itching and 58% less dandruff on average.

Bladderwrack Super Serum, ageing, eczema-prone skin, 22 participants, 28 days: 30% fewer wrinkles in the clinical assessment, with every participant improving, plus 74% less itching, 53% less redness, 40% less pigmentation, 37% smaller pores, 19% less skin laxity and 14% more elasticity.

Bladderwrack Eye Cream, 22 participants, 28 days, under dermatologist and ophthalmologist supervision: 35% lighter dark circles, 37% less puffiness, 29% fewer expression lines and 54% more skin moisture.

24H Face Cream for Sensitive, Dry and Reactive Skin, 22 participants: 29% more skin hydration after 4 weeks, and 37% less itching within 10 minutes of a single application in an irritation test.

Skincare built from difficult skin

Saaren Taika was founded by Johanna Amnelin, who has lived with sensitive, reactive skin her whole life and still develops the formulas herself. Today the company is led by her daughter, CEO and co-owner Veera Amnelin-Kylämäki.

"My mother started this company because nothing on the shelf worked for her skin," says Veera Amnelin-Kylämäki. "That is why we do not ask anyone to trust a promise. We test the finished products with independent laboratories and publish what changed in the skin. We have grown without a single euro of outside investment, so every study is a choice we made with our own money, because we believe proof is what sensitive skin deserves."

At the heart of the range is wild bladderwrack from the Bothnian Sea, gathered by hand on the Finnish coast only after storms have detached it. An independent analysis by the French seaweed laboratory Algaia found 22% fucoidans in its dry matter, more than twice the 6 to 10% typically reported for Atlantic bladderwrack. Fucoidans are sugars found only in brown seaweed and studied for their soothing, skin-protecting properties, and the seaweed also contains antioxidant phlorotannins and carotenoids. Saaren Taika captures these compounds in its own actives, Fucus DuoActive® and Fucus Fusion®, which it develops and makes itself and does not sell to other brands.

Product development, production and the company's own bladderwrack actives all sit under one roof in its factory in Perniö, Finland, which few independent skincare brands can say.
