"Moby Dick, The Companion Edition" Restores the American First Edition, the Ending London Dropped, All 135 Chapters, and the Hawthorne Dedication
Verified against the 1851 Harper & Brothers printing itself, with an appendix on the two first editions and discussion questions throughout
NEW YORK, Oct. 30, 2026, There are two first editions of Moby Dick, and they are not the same book. A new Companion Classics edition, Moby Dick, The Companion Edition, presents the complete United States first-edition text, Moby-Dick; or, The Whale (Harper & Brothers, New York, November 1851), verified against the 1851 Harper printing itself: the Etymology and Extracts, all 135 chapters, and the Epilogue, 207,804 words in all.
It matters which text a reader gets. The English edition, published a month earlier in London as The Whale, dropped the Epilogue, the pages that explain how Ishmael lived to tell the tale, along with some thirty-five passages. This edition follows the American text throughout, Epilogue included, and restores the dedication page to Nathaniel Hawthorne that many reprints quietly drop. One point of honesty the edition insists on: the 1851 edition was published unillustrated, so no period art program is claimed or invented, the edition tells the reader so, in so many words.
The companion material, all of it original to this edition, includes an introduction on the 1851 double publication, the book's failure in Melville's lifetime, and the twentieth-century revival that made it immortal; a Who's Who of the Pequod's company, Ishmael, Ahab, Starbuck, Stubb, Flask, Queequeg, Tashtego, Daggoo, Pip, Fedallah, and the rest, verified against the text; five explainers: the Nantucket whale fishery and the Pequod's articles, whale species and the cetology chapters, the Essex, the real whaleship sunk by a whale in 1820, whaleships and try-works, and the book's biblical naming web; a short life of Herman Melville; a plain-spoken note on the period text, covering the whaling industry's realities and its mixed crews, with the text itself unaltered; an appendix, "Two First Editions," on how the London and New York printings of 1851 differ and why the Epilogue is the hinge of the whole book; and discussion questions for ten chapter groups, spoiler-fenced, plus a whole-book set.
Alongside the book, the Moby Dick, Book Club Kit offers the edition's discussion material as a printable PDF for reading groups: a three-meeting plan fenced by chapter range, a chapter map of all 135 chapters, and a "Spot the Passage" feature for hunting down the book's famous passages in the text. The kit is available for $7 through the editor's Payhip store: https://payhip.com/b/Qi9dI
Moby Dick, The Companion Edition is available now as an eBook ($9.99) through Payhip: https://payhip.com/b/Pp7kW, and in The Classics and Companions Shop on the editor's Linktree. Paperback and hardcover print editions follow on Amazon. The novel's text is public domain worldwide (Melville died in 1891); all companion material is original to this edition. This is an independent publication, not affiliated with any film or with any other edition.
