The former Kelso's Sandwich Shoppe co-owner joins Lulie Tavern's head chef for a Greek-inspired Sunday barbecue above Abbotsford.
A rooftop barbecue with your mates, a plate piled high and plenty of pickles: Kitty & Riley's Rooftop BBQ is taking over Full Moon Fever, upstairs at Lulie Tavern, on Sunday 29 November, from 12pm-3pm.
For $30 per person, guests can build their own plate and stack it with a Greek-inspired spread of barbecue skewers, handmade flatbread, dips, salad and Kitty's homemade pickles and hot sauce.
On the menu are zucchini, halloumi and lemon skewers cooked on the barbecue, koftas, whipped feta, tzatziki and a fennel and orange salad. Riley's freshly made flatbread is the vessel for wrapping, scooping and getting a bit of everything into each bite.
The pair met through the Lulie community, and the collaboration grew from a shared love of good food and feeding friends. Kitty brings the pickles, hot sauce and menu ideas; Riley brings the kitchen experience to turn them into a rooftop feast.
"We both have a passion for yum food and connecting with great people," says Riley. "This is also about having fun! We want people to come with their besties, drink and eat in the sun and catch up on the goss."
A self-taught cook and former co-owner of Kelso's Sandwich Shoppe, Kitty developed her confidence making pickles for the shop's sandwiches. Since selling her share, she has been cooking with food-waste and food-literacy social enterprise Open Table, leading volunteers to prepare a free weekly community lunch for around 90-120 people. She also runs nutrition workshops and created and maintains the food menu at CBD whisky bar Whisky and Alement.
"My pickles are something I've always dreamed of seeing on menus and people's plates," says Kitty.
For the barbecue, the vegetables for her pickles come from Queen's Harvest at Queen Victoria Market, with the pickles and hot sauces made by hand.
Riley's career spans fine dining, suburban cafés, private events and festival kitchens. For this collaboration, she has worked through cookbooks and recipe testing to bring Kitty's vision to life, making everything possible from scratch, including the flatbread and koftas.
Both cooks nominate the vegetarian skewers as a highlight: charred lemon brings brightness to salty halloumi and tender zucchini, with pickles and dips ready to pile alongside.
"I hope people leave the cutlery on the counter and dig in with their hands, using the flatbread as the vessel for all those different flavours," says Riley.
To drink, Kitty suggests starting with a Lulie Bloody Mary, moving to an ice-cold beer and finishing with a margarita. Settle in upstairs, build your plate and make an afternoon of it.
