Gotta catch 'em all? - Experts reveal how to identify if your Pokémon collection could be worth millions

Consumer Stanhope Insurance

Stanhope Insurance experts share five steps for identifying valuable Pokémon cards and ensuring collections are properly insured.

With rare Pokémon card collections selling for millions of pounds, experts urge collectors to check their collections' value before selling or storing them.

As the franchise celebrates its 30th anniversary, Pokémon collecting is seeing renewed interest, with industry figures calling it one of Europe's fastest-growing toy franchises.

Google searches for "Pokémon card value guide" have increased by 281% over the past year, while rare cards and sought-after collections are fetching substantial sums at auction.

With cards that once cost just a few pounds potentially becoming valuable collectables, experts at Stanhope Insurance have revealed the five steps collectors should take to establish what their Pokémon cards could be worth and how to protect them.

1. Identify exactly which card you have

Small differences on Pokémon cards can have a significant impact on their value. Start by checking the Pokémon's name, the card number, and the set it belongs to. A card number that exceeds the set's stated total can indicate a secret rare card, although this varies by set.

Look for rarity symbols, such as circles, diamonds, and stars, as well as special illustrations, holographic finishes, and other distinctive features. Older cards, limited releases, and particularly sought-after versions can be more valuable than standard cards featuring the same Pokémon.

However, rarity alone does not guarantee a high price. The card's age, demand, authenticity and condition all play a part.

2. Check the condition

A rare card may look impressive, but its condition can make a substantial difference to what someone is willing to pay.

Look carefully at the corners, edges and surface for scratches, creases, fading, stains, or other damage. Cards in mint condition generally attract more interest than those with significant signs of wear.

Avoid trying to improve a card's appearance by cleaning, polishing or repairing it, as this could cause further damage and affect its value.

3. Research what similar cards have actually sold for

An online listing with a significant asking price does not necessarily mean a card is worth that amount.

Instead, use trusted online marketplaces to look for completed sales of the same card, focusing on its edition, condition and any professional grading. Recent sold prices can give you a more realistic indication of what buyers are prepared to pay.

It's important to bear in mind that prices can fluctuate as collector demand changes, so one unusually high sale is not necessarily a reliable guide to the card's current value.

For rare or potentially high-value cards, seek a professional valuation rather than relying solely on online listings.

4. Keep your collection safe

Once you've identified cards that could be valuable, think carefully about how you store them.

Use suitable card sleeves and protective holders to reduce the risk of scratches, bending and damage. Keep them away from direct sunlight, moisture and extreme temperature changes, which can cause deterioration over time.

It is also worth keeping a record of your collection, including clear photographs, purchase receipts and any professional valuations.

5. Check whether your collection is properly insured

If your childhood collection turns out to be worth considerably more than you expected, don't assume your existing home insurance will automatically cover its full value.

Check your policy's limits for individual items and collections, along with any exclusions or requirements for particularly valuable possessions as you may need to list certain items separately or arrange specialist cover.

William Cooper, Managing Director at Stanhope Insurance said:

"Many people will have Pokémon cards tucked away in a drawer or stored in the loft, without giving much thought to what they could be worth today. While not every collection will contain a hidden gem, it is worth checking its value before you decide to sell or simply put it back into storage.

"If you think you have a valuable card, speak to a specialist before attempting to clean, repair or alter it. Even seemingly small changes can affect its condition, and it is important to establish what you actually have before making any decisions.

"We have seen high-value Pokémon collections insured for millions of pounds, showing just how valuable collectables can become over time. Keep photographs, receipts and professional valuations somewhere safe, and check that your cover reflects the value of your collection.

"Whether it is a rare Pokémon card, vintage games or vinyl records, something that started as a hobby can become a significant asset over time. Knowing what you own and making sure it is properly protected can make all the difference."
