'Frankenstein, The Original 1818 Text, Halloween Edition' Restores the Novel Mary Shelley Actually Published First, No Bolts, No Green Skin, No Flat Head
A new Halloween edition restores Mary Shelley's original 1818 text of Frankenstein with companion material and a Book Club Kit.

The Halloween Edition prints the complete 1818 text with the story of the two texts and a Book Club Kit built for an October read
NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2026, Every October the costumes get it wrong. A new Halloween Edition of Frankenstein has been published to set the season right: the novel exactly as it first appeared in 1818, when an eighteen-year-old named Mary Godwin invented it during a ghost-story contest in a rain-drowned villa on Lake Geneva, in the Year Without a Summer. Frankenstein, The Original 1818 Text, Halloween Edition (Companion Classics) presents the complete 1818 text, Walton's four letters and all twenty-three chapters, restored from the first edition and cross-checked against scans of the 1818 printing, with the 1818 edition's own front matter, and original companion material by editor Horace Harriott Jr.
This is the novel before the movies, and before Mary Shelley's own 1831 revision softened it. In the 1818 text printed here, Elizabeth is Victor's cousin, the chapters are the original twenty-three, the Preface is the one published in 1818, and the Creature has no name, no bolts, and no green skin. He teaches himself to read Milton, Plutarch, and Goethe at a cottage wall, and pleads his case to his maker in some of the most eloquent prose of the nineteenth century. It is darker, stranger, and sadder than the legend, and it was quite literally invented as a Halloween game, two centuries early.
The companion material includes a new introduction on the two-texts story and the summer of 1816; a who's-who of fourteen characters, with the "Frankenstein is the monster" error addressed head-on; five explainers, galvanism and the science of 1818, the nested letter-frame, the Prometheus myth, the Arctic frame, and what "modern" meant in 1818; a short life of Mary Shelley; a plain-spoken note on the period text; an appendix, "1818 vs 1831, What Mary Shelley Changed," limited to verified differences; and discussion questions for every letter and chapter, plus a whole-book set. No film imagery or film likeness is used anywhere in the edition: the Creature here is Shelley's.
Alongside the book, the Frankenstein, Halloween Edition Book Club Kit offers the edition's discussion material as a printable PDF, arranged as a three-meeting Halloween schedule, one stormy sitting for the letters and the creation, one for the Creature's own story, one for the wedding night and the ice. The kit is available for $7 through the editor's Payhip store: https://payhip.com/b/BtRSm
Frankenstein, The Original 1818 Text, Halloween Edition is available now as an eBook ($9.99) through Payhip: https://payhip.com/b/MLGw9, paperback and hardcover print editions follow on Amazon. The novel's text is public domain (Mary Shelley died in 1851, and the 1818 text is public domain worldwide); all companion material is original to this edition.
