Father launches Sugar Pulse Science to investigate the unanswered causes of type 1 diabetes

October 20, 2026

Oleg Pogozhev, a father of a child living with type 1 diabetes, has launched Sugar Pulse Science, an independent patient-led research initiative focused on a question many families still carry after diagnosis: why does type 1 diabetes begin?

The initiative grew from family experience. The daily demands of insulin management, especially for children, make better long-term answers urgent. Sugar Pulse Science is not presenting a cure or a single theory. Its purpose is to follow published research, communicate with scientists, publish early work and support a careful search for the biological pathways, triggers and mechanisms that may eventually inform prevention or earlier intervention.

The initiative follows major developments in cell therapy, gene therapy and immune protection. Research groups and companies including Vertex, Sernova, Seraxis and Sanofi are working toward practical options for people who already live with type 1 diabetes. Those efforts are important. Sugar Pulse Science is asking a complementary question about the beginning of the disease itself.

The project is currently financed by its founders and welcomes support from people who believe the causes of type 1 diabetes deserve sustained attention. It does not provide medical advice and does not claim that any current patient story represents a universal cure.

One source of hope for the family has been the story of Katie Beth Hand, Patient 9 in an Eledon clinical trial. Her experience illustrates why research matters, while remaining one patient story rather than proof of a solution for everyone.
