Discover Alone maps more than one million places across Ireland and Britain

Ireland, 17 October 2026 - Discover Alone, a free nearby-place map made by Rickie Doherty, now shows 1,087,615 entries across Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The map is meant to answer an ordinary question: what is around me that I have never noticed? Visitors can start with their current area, move the map and open individual place pages rather than search through a long list of names.

The current public count includes 261,536 Irish entries, with places in all 32 counties, and further entries across England, Scotland and Wales. Records range from historic buildings and old remains to gardens, beaches and other places worth noticing. The number describes map entries, not a claim that every place has been visited, photographed or fully written up by Discover Alone.

Rickie began the project after repeatedly hearing people say they did not know what was nearby. It started with Donegal and grew as more place records were connected to locations on the map. Each place page gives visitors a starting point for finding the place and reading the available source details. Visitors should check current access and opening arrangements before travelling; a dot on a map is not a promise that a site is open to the public.

Explorer Tom, the site's playful guide, adds lively stories, practical tips and a nudge to get out and look around on selected place pages. His jokes are meant to make discovery fun while the names, locations and access details remain grounded in the actual record. The project also includes Tom's picks for eating, drinking and staying in Donegal. It does not present a made-up scene as a photograph of a real place.

Discover Alone is free to browse at https://discoveralone.com/. Its nearby map works across Ireland and Britain, and a visitor can move from one place to others in the surrounding area. Rickie's aim is to make the scale of local history and everyday places usable for a real day out, one area at a time.
