DANIEL AGRA MARKS 15 YEARS OF EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The Spanish artist Daniel Agra completes fifteen years of photography and optical experimentation, with seven projects behind him and one underlying question: how to turn a reality outside into an experience within.
A quindecennial, an uncommon word but a fitting one, is long enough to look back without nostalgia. In that time Agra has built seven series (Abyssurbs, Cloudscapes, Gallaecia Perpetua-Intempore, Génesis, Ensueños de Teseracto, neowabi and ArsKúu), received more than fifty international awards and honourable mentions, and placed work in collections across Spain, the United States, Greece, South Korea and Italy. Among them are the Historical Archive of the Col·legi d'Arquitectes de Catalunya [COAC] in Barcelona, the Museo del Ferrocarril (Railway Museum) in Madrid, the CICA Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea, and The Museum of Avant-garde in Milan.
It all unfolds within what the artist himself calls poetics of perception, memory and territory. His photography leaves behind the old office of witness: the camera no longer records, it interprets, and the image becomes a mental space where what drives us to imagine matters too. It is expanded photography, at the exact point where a photograph behaves like a painting without ceasing to be photography. These are images that do not aspire to be identified, only accepted, and that carry the viewer from "what is this?" to "what does this make me feel?".
Each series looks from a different place. Abyssurbs stays with the silence of the crowd in the city, Cloudscapes turns the sky into a pictorial surface, and Génesis returns to a light that does not illuminate, it founds. In Gallaecia Perpetua-Intempore the camera gives up cataloguing the Galician territory and starts listening to it. neowabi goes down to the worn wall, where imperfection stops being a flaw, and in ArsKúu the image becomes matter, object, space.
The experiment is at the root of it. Self-taught, with decades of work in fashion and raw materials, Agra uses no editing or retouching software. The RAW file is developed solely with the camera's own software, and every abstraction, every effect, is born optically, physically, at the moment of capture, through devices that change from one project to the next, including some of his own development. Nothing is simulated afterwards. And when a work later intervenes on the photograph, as in ArsKúu, that intervention is declared and physical.
From A Coruña, where he lives, the Spanish artist continues an investigation he does not consider closed. For him, abstraction is not an escape but a way of going deeper into reality, which is why he keeps testing. Recognition matters less than what his work adds to the conversation about image, territory and subjectivity.
