Cyber Security Breakthrough: How a Real-World VPS Cut SSH Brute-Force Attacks from 5,000 to 12 per Day in Minutes

Technology Lowegate Studio

Lowegate Studio's OrionEye platform reportedly cut SSH brute-force attacks on a client server from 5,000 to 12 per day via AI correlation and one-click Fail2Ban enforcement.

LOWER SAXONY, GERMANY, October 16, 2026, Lowegate Studio today published a compelling real-world case study showcasing how its flagship cyber threat intelligence and active defence platform, OrionEye v4.0, successfully mitigated a severe, ongoing cyber attack against a live production web server, reducing malicious SSH traffic by over 99.7% in a single operational session.

The case study centers on Dominik, an independent IT Support consultant managing client web infrastructure. Although the client's website remained technically accessible, the underlying server was plagued by persistent network bottlenecks, unexpected latency, and unstable connection drops. Standard system monitoring tools failed to surface a clear explanation, illustrating a widespread industry issue: a functioning website does not necessarily mean a healthy server.

From Hidden Log Data to Immediate Visual Intelligence

By connecting OmniAgent OS, OrionEye's lightweight, zero-agent infrastructure interface, Dominik uncovered an ongoing high-density attack: over 5,000 SSH brute-force attempts per day targeting common system usernames (such as root, admin, ubuntu, and test).

Instead of presenting an unmanageable list of raw IP addresses or static log dumps, OrionEye automatically ingested the logs and applied its AI correlation engine:

  1. Detection & Geospatial Mapping: 5,000 individual login attempts were geolocated and plotted visually on an interactive map.
  2. AI Campaign Correlation: OrionEye grouped scattered attacker IPs into coordinated botnet campaigns based on shared target usernames, time intervals, connection frequencies, and target ASNs, assigning each campaign a verified confidence score.
  3. One-Click Active Defence: Rather than manually configuring firewall rules, the operator executed direct enforcement via Fail2Ban right from the OrionEye dashboard, banning entire bot campaigns instantly on the host server.

Outstanding Operational & Energy Results

The impact of the single-session intervention was immediate and measurable:

  • Pre-intervention attack volume: ~5,000 automated SSH attacks/day
  • Post-intervention attack volume: 12-13 residual background probes/day
  • Security integrity: 0 successful breaches
  • Infrastructure stability: Server latency stabilized, network bandwidth was restored, and unnecessary CPU utilization caused by log processing and connection handshakes was eliminated.

"I had built the website for a client. The site worked, but the server had constant network problems. I connected OmniAgent, ran a scan of SSH attacks, and found 5,000 brute-force attempts on the SSH port," explained Dominik, IT Support Consultant. "OrionEye didn't just produce a report to read. It made it possible to see, understand, and block within the same session, in a few clicks. That is the distance between knowing you have a problem and having solved it."

The Hidden Cost of Repelled Attacks

Lowegate Studio highlights that automated brute-force attempts inflict significant financial and environmental overhead even when unsuccessful. Processing thousands of TCP handshakes and daemon authentications consumes precious CPU cycles, inflates server log storage, increases data centre PUE overhead, and drains energy resources. OrionEye's Green Active Defence framework addresses this by blocking threat vectors at the kernel level, mitigating CPU burn and server cooling costs before malicious traffic reaches user applications.

About the Company

OrionEye is a unified Cyber Threat Intelligence and Active Defence platform developed by Lowegate Studio. Combining 2D/3D geospatial threat mapping, AI-powered multi-engine OSINT aggregation (Uncover Engine), RIPE Atlas probe forensics, and natural-language LLM orchestration via Model Context Protocol (MCP), OrionEye enables organizations, IT administrators, and MSPs to detect, investigate, and neutralize global threat campaigns in real time.
