FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Wolverhampton, UK, 31 October 2026

WOLVERHAMPTON, UK, Custom Postal Boxes, a Wolverhampton, UK supplier of custom printed postal, mailer and shipping boxes, has published a guide to help UK ecommerce businesses navigate the 2026/27 Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) packaging rules. The guide explains how EPR thresholds, producer categories and reporting duties apply to the postal boxes online sellers use every day.

"UK Packaging EPR 2026/2027: What Ecommerce Businesses Need to Know About Postal Boxes" starts with the question many sellers ask first: whether they are obligated producers at all. It sets out the GOV.UK threshold table, under which businesses supplying less than 25 tonnes of packaging a year face no obligation regardless of turnover, while businesses supplying 25 to 50 tonnes may be small producers where annual turnover exceeds £1 million. Turnover above £2 million alone does not create an obligation without the tonnage test, and the turnover test uses annual turnover worldwide. For 2026 reporting, businesses assess packaging supplied or imported between 1 January and 31 December 2025.

The guide then explains why a cardboard box sent with an online order normally counts as shipment packaging under EPR, and why, for direct-to-consumer orders, that packaging is generally household packaging unless non-household status can be evidenced, a company address on the delivery label is not enough on its own. It also notes that responsibility follows the packaging activity and supply-chain circumstances rather than simply who bought the box, so brand ownership can change the answer. The full guide is published on the Custom Postal Boxes website at https://custompostalboxes.co.uk/, alongside practical advice for UK ecommerce packaging buyers.

For large producers, the guide summarises the reporting calendar: register each year and report packaging data every six months, with 1 October 2026 the deadline for packaging supplied from 1 January to 30 June 2026 and 1 April 2027 the deadline for the second half of 2026. Small producers follow a lighter regime of registration, a registration fee and annual reporting, with the 2026 report due by 1 April 2027.

A later section covers the Recyclability Assessment Methodology (RAM), noting that large producers assessing packaging supplied in 2026 should use RAM version 1.1, while PackUK has published a separate RAM 2027 framework for the 2027 reporting year. The guide stresses that "cardboard" alone does not settle an assessment: if a fibre-based box exceeds five per cent plastic by mass it moves into the fibre-based-composite assessment, and the materials guidance applies a 40mm threshold in at least two dimensions at the sortation stage. Labels, tape and tear strips belong in the specification too, and fee modulation makes recyclability financially relevant, a 1.2 factor applies to red-rated material in 2026/27, scheduled to rise to 1.6 in 2027/28 and 2.0 in 2028/29. Businesses comparing board constructions can review the company's corrugated boxes range at https://custompostalboxes.co.uk/product-category/corrugated-boxes/ .

The guide closes with a ten-point practical checklist, from identifying the responsible legal entity and packaging activity, to recording material and component weights, classifying shipment packaging correctly, evidencing any non-household claim, completing the applicable RAM assessment, and tracking design changes so revised packaging does not inherit an outdated specification.
