Cap News launches, reading every set of accounts filed at Companies House

Domain Farm Ltd has launched Cap News, a daily title built on the UK company accounts register.

The site reads sets of accounts as they are filed at Companies House and reports what they show. More than 807,000 filings have been processed to date, and the figure grows every working day.

The approach is unusual. Company accounts are public, free and filed in volume, but they are rarely read at scale because doing so is tedious. Almost all reporting on company finances is triggered by an announcement. Cap News works the other way round, starting from the filings themselves, which means it surfaces patterns nobody has announced.

A recent example: on a single day's filings, 36 per cent of hotel company accounts showed a deficit. That is not a press release anyone would issue, and it is visible only if the filings are read as a body rather than one at a time.
