'Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass, The Tenniel Illustrated Edition' Restores All 92 of Tenniel's Illustrations That the Free Online Texts Dropped
A new combined edition restores all 92 of John Tenniel's original illustrations to Carroll's two Alice books, alongside new companion material and a book club kit.

Both Alice books complete in one edition, every picture back at its passage, plus the opening poem the online text omits
NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2026, Both of Lewis Carroll's Alice books have been published in one edition with every one of John Tenniel's illustrations restored to its place in the text. Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass, The Tenniel Illustrated Edition (Companion Classics) presents Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) complete, printed from the texts of the early Macmillan editions and cross-checked chapter by chapter against them, with original companion material by editor Horace Harriott Jr.
The pictures are the point. Tenniel drew 42 illustrations for Wonderland and 50 for Looking-Glass, and Carroll supervised them so closely that he withdrew the entire first printing of 1865 over the quality of their reproduction. Yet the copies of these books that circulate free online today have had the pictures stripped out, the standard online texts of both books contain none of them. This edition puts all 92 back, extracted from scans of the early Macmillan printings, each one set at the passage it illustrates, plus the Looking-Glass chessboard diagram and Carroll's prefatory poems, including "All in the golden afternoon," which the online Wonderland text omits altogether.
The companion apparatus includes an introduction telling the whole story, the golden afternoon of 4 July 1862 on the Isis, Alice Liddell and the hand-written Alice's Adventures Under Ground, the suppressed first edition of 1865, and the making of the sequel; a who's-who of sixteen entries, with the three queens carefully distinguished; five explainers, the famous parodies decoded, the logic, language, and mathematics jokes of a Christ Church don, the chess game of Looking-Glass move by move, nonsense as a genre from Edward Lear onward, and Tenniel and the pictures, from drawing to the Dalziel brothers' wood engravings; a short life of Lewis Carroll, told factually and without sensationalism; a note on the period; and discussion questions for all 24 chapters plus the whole books, written for adult book clubs and for families and classrooms reading together. In keeping with the edition's honesty about its text, the "Wasp in a Wig" episode is not included: Carroll cut it before publication in 1871, and the edition prints the book he published.
Alongside the book, the Alice Book Club Kit offers the edition's discussion material as a printable PDF, arranged as a four-meeting schedule, two evenings per book, with a read-aloud hosting guide and a "Spot the Plate" exercise. The kit is available for $7 through the editor's Payhip store: https://payhip.com/b/0Edis
Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass, The Tenniel Illustrated Edition is available now as an eBook ($9.99) through Payhip: https://payhip.com/b/D46XC, paperback and hardcover print editions follow on Amazon. Both books' texts and Tenniel's illustrations are public domain, declared as such; the introduction, notes, and questions are new and original to this edition.
