Survival Guides UK Sets Out to Build a Huge Free Outdoor Skills Challenge

Independent outdoor skills project aims to create a growing collection of thousands of practical challenges, encouraging people to get outside, learn new skills and put their knowledge into practice.

Survival Guides UK has announced an ambitious new project to build an ever-expanding library of free outdoor skills challenges, with the long-term aim of offering thousands of activities for people to discover, attempt and master.

The SGUK Outdoor Skills Challenge is designed to be different from a traditional course. Participants will not have to work through a fixed programme or complete activities in a prescribed order. Instead, they can choose a challenge that interests them, try something new or discover a completely unexpected outdoor skill.

Challenges will span a wide range of subjects, including navigation, knots, campcraft, shelter building, outdoor cooking, fire skills, wildlife observation, weather awareness, practical making and outdoor problem-solving.

Some activities will be suitable for beginners, while others will encourage participants to develop existing abilities, experiment with different techniques or take on more demanding tasks. The collection is intended to grow continually rather than stop at an arbitrary target.

Craig Burr, creator of Survival Guides UK, said: "I want to give people more reasons to get outside and actually try things, rather than simply reading about outdoor skills. You might arrive looking for a navigation challenge and end up learning something about campcraft, wildlife or outdoor cooking. The idea is to make learning practical, enjoyable and something people want to keep coming back to."

The challenge library builds on Survival Guides UK's existing collection of outdoor skills articles, quizzes, games and practical resources. These provide a knowledge base for people who want to understand a skill before attempting it, while the challenges give them a reason to put that knowledge into practice.

Participation in the challenges will be free. Free membership will offer additional ways to record progress, collect achievements and badges, and build a personal record of verified challenge completions. Members can submit photographic evidence through the site's social activity wall for review.

The project is intended for a broad audience, from people taking their first steps into outdoor activities to experienced walkers, campers, bushcraft enthusiasts, families and outdoor groups looking for fresh ideas. Although inspired in part by traditional scouting skills, Survival Guides UK is an independent resource intended for anyone interested in learning about the outdoors.

The first challenges are the beginning of a much larger collection. New activities can be added over time, allowing the library to develop alongside the people who use it.
