Portuguese wine sensation Tagus Creek sponsors 2006 Poppy Appeal
Written by Francesca Law

Drink Portuguese … and wear your Poppy with pride!

Enjoy a glass of Portugal’s latest wine sensation Tagus Creek and you’ll be supporting The Royal British Legion in its bid to smash all previous targets by raising over £26m in the 2006 Poppy Appeal

Tagus Creek, the award-winning wine brand from Portugal, will be actively supporting this year’s Poppy Appeal with a pledge to donate 10p to the Royal British Legion for every bottle of the wine sold.  Branded with the distinctive Poppy icon, bottles of Tagus Creek will be available throughout

the year in Morrisons, Booths and Majestic retailing from £3.99 to £6.99* and also now in Nando’s  nationwide (breaking news, today!)

“The year round campaign represents an exciting and highly effective way of supporting the Legion in their all-year-round welfare work … my special thanks go to Francesca Law of Drinks Network for recommending our wines for this major sponsorship opportunity” said Nick Oakley of Oakley Wine Agencies, UK agent for Tagus Creek.

The full Tagus Creek range comprises two reds, white, rosé and a reserve.  The wines have been specially developed for the UK market in a state-of-the-art winery just north-east of Lisbon. Indigenous varieties are blended with more internationally-recognised grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon & Aragones; Chardonnay & Fernao Pires; Shiraz & Touriga Nacional … making it a very approachable brand with significant on-shelf standout and consumer appeal.

Tagus Creek Rosé is the real shining light of the range.  Recently announced on UK TV Food as the winner of the Great Value Rose Award in the International Wine Challenge 2006, it also came away from this prestigious awards ceremony as a Silver medallist.

Top wine critic Simon Woods described the wine as “Strawberry Mivvi lollies … in liquid form: luscious, moreish and a bargain.”  Tagus Creek Rosé can be also expected to grace the shelves in Waitrose from Spring 2007.

Commenting on the new alliance, Joseph Dublin, Head of Corporate Trusts and Relations at The Royal British Legion said: “Charity-based marketing continues to be an important way for us to generate funds for the Poppy Appeal all year round.  Wine has proved to be a very popular product both with our supporters and the wider public… and the money raised by the Tagus Creek campaign will directly help The Royal British Legion respond to the thousands of calls for help we receive each year”  he added:  “… although the Legion is often associated with older veterans, it also helps younger people affected by more recent conflicts, including Bosnia, Northern Ireland, The Falklands, the first Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan.”

This year’s Poppy Appeal will highlight the fact that 10.5m people are eligible for the Legion’s support and aims to encourage more people than ever to wear a poppy.
