National Van Rental, one of the UK’s leading providers of rental vans, is urging small and medium sized businesses and private van renters to consider its top tips for driving rental vans – even those who may have been driving for years.
“Driving a van is not the same as driving a car yet many people get into a van without considering the implications of driving a much bigger vehicle.” said Frank Reynolds, Small Business Specialist at National. “Smaller businesses such as independent retailers, printers and trades people are the most vulnerable to the consequences of any accident – particularly those who are self-employed. Frank Reynolds adds “Of course, key to this advice is to choose a van rental company that has vans in tip top condition and can provide one way and overnight van rental plus 24/7 breakdown assistance. National has extended its number of van hire locations to over 100 across the UK to provide greater access to its 5,000 strong fleet. With a wide network of locations and fleet, hiring a van for deliveries, collections and office moves could not be easier. Businesses interested in van hire from National should call 0845 600 0540 or visit www.nationalcar.co.uk. Before starting your trip: · Check your mirrors are all set correctly so that you can see as much as the road as possible.· Ask someone to guide you out if you need to back out of a space.· Make sure the doors are securely locked at the back or on the side of the vehicle.· If unsure check the height of the vehicle with the van rental company. When out on the road:· Remember you will need a bigger braking distance as the vehicle will be much heavier than a normal car – so don’t get too close to the vehicle in front.· You will need to take turns and corners much slower than you would in a car.· Check your route for bridges and overpasses – you may find a route you use regularly in a car is no longer accessible due to the clearance height.· Be aware of trees which may be overhanging the road.· Ensure any loose loads are properly secured.· Ensure that you signal well in advance of making a manoeuvre – and make changes slowly.
