Charity golf day at Macdonald Portal Hotel in Tarporley
Written by ADAM DENT

Golfers will be aiming to smash through the £55,000 barrier in the tenth annual golf day for a Merseyside children’s hospice.

The tenth Concept Golf Classic is being staged at the Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf and Spa in Cobblers Cross Lane, Tarporley, on Friday, September 5.

Since 1998, golfers have raised around £50,000 for Claire House Children’s Hospice in the Wirral which cares for youngsters from birth up to 23 years old with life threatening or life limiting conditions and their families in Cheshire, the North West, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

Teams of four will be served bacon rolls and coffee before the 18-hole golf competition on the Championship course gets under way.

A three-course dinner and auction will be held in the evening at the hotel when Liverpool Echo editor Alistair Machray will be the guest speaker.

Linda Thompson, from organisers Events by Concept, said it would be fantastic to crown the tenth anniversary year in style.

“This has always proved to be a popular golf day for businesses and organisations who invite their directors, management, personnel or clients to be involved,” she said.

“We have almost reached capacity but still have room to welcome a few more teams to join us.

“Competitors will have the opportunity to win a fabulous £10,000 five-star golf trip to a destination of their choice on the roll of a dice but this prize doesn’t affect their amateur status.

“We would like to say a big thank-you to our main sponsors Allied Irish Bank (GB) who is once again sponsoring the Concept Golf Classic.”

Paul Spencer, general manager of the Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf and Spa, said to have raised such a large sum for a local hospice over the last decade was tremendous.

“Charities such as Claire House Children’s Hospice rely heavily on the generosity of local fundraisers and all the golfers who have taken part in this charity day deserve great credit,” he said.

“This is the fifth successive year that the Concept Golf Classic has been held at Portal and we wish the organisers every success.”

Anyone interested in entering a team of four, priced at £499, can contact Linda on 0151 336 6545 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts Limited operates 48 hotels across the UK and ten resorts throughout the UK and Spain.  The company employs over 4,400 staff and operates in excess of 3900 hotel rooms. First established in 1990 by Donald Macdonald and colleagues, the company was floated in 1996 on the main London Stock Exchange. In 2003, it returned to private ownership and was one of Scotland’s biggest public to private deals at a cost of £620m, which was wholly underwritten by the Bank of Scotland.  The Bank now owns 50% of the equity with the remainder held by the management.

The Group’s focus is on developing its strong portfolio of four and five star hotels, with each offering its own character and individuality underpinned with the quality and attention to detail expected of the Macdonald brand. In particular, the company prides itself on the seasonality and provenance of its food within the hotels, from breakfast through to dinner, as well as its wide range of specially selected wines. The Group has recently embarked on a programme of investment and refurbishment that includes properties such as Macdonald Blossoms in Chester, Macdonald Old England in Windermere and Compleat Angler in Marlow.
The Group has also recently created two new hotels – the Macdonald Portal Hotel and Spa was launched in July 2007 on the site of the Portal Championship Golf Course, in Tarporley, Cheshire, and the Macdonald Manchester Hotel, situated in the heart of the city centre, adjacent to Piccadilly Station, opened in October 2007.
