In recent months, Carbon Footprint and Food Miles have become headline news. As fears increase that the damage to the environment maybe irreversible, large organisations are having to reassess the impact that their business has on global climate change. The grocery retail sector is particularly under pressure to reform, as 7 day delivery schedules into the depots are now the norm. There has also been an increasing public awareness of the food miles that non seasonal fresh fruit, vegetables and cheap foreign meat products travel before they arrive on the shelves. As retailers fight to gain market share with reduced prices, increased ranges, convenience and loyalty schemes, it is only natural that being perceived as “the most environmentally friendly” grocery chain would become key tactic in the war for customer loyalty. Consolidation programs have been the action of choice for some supermarkets looking to streamline the supply chain and improve on-shelf availability, and many have considered a consolidation model. As the spotlight has turned to highlight carbon footprints (particularly with regard to the supply chain) a Collaborative Consolidation approach is the next logical step. Whilst traditional consolidation provides a single retailer with a range of benefits, the collaborative approach will offer suppliers and retailers alike a quick, responsive supply chain solution, which will also lower costs, food miles and the carbon footprint, whilst increasing vehicle utilisation and control of the supply chain upstream from the RDC. To date, Concept BSP has engaged with a number of different UK retailers and wholesalers who are all poised to begin a pilot scheme within the next few months. It is expected that once this phase builds momentum, that other retailers will follow suite, thus increasing the benefits to all.
