This week's Logistics Bulletin reports on a broad mix of acquisitions, JVs, financial results and contract wins, from Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the US. Building global service capabilities, Wincanton has signed a joint venture agreement with Kerry Logistics, a Hong-Kong based logistics specialist, to design and operate supply chain solutions in and between Europe and Asia. The Wincanton-Kerry Logistics joint venture will offer customers a single logistics solution, covering their land, sea and air requirements, from manufacturing plants in the Far East through to stores across Europe and vice versa.
Strong sets of financial results have been reported this week by UTi Worldwide, DSV and Deutsche Bahn, whilst profits have been hit at Maersk and China COSCO. Deutsche Bahn has reported that it achieved all its business goals on its way to partial privatisation. Logistics subsidiary Schenker recorded revenues of €13,232.0 million, as operating profit (EBIT) reached €367.0 million.
Among contract news this week, deals were reported for Cat Logistics and DHL in the US and CEVA Newsfast and TNT Express in the UK. Elsewhere, Volvo Cars has selected DSV Solutions (Automotive) to build and run a new logistics complex for Volvo Cars on a site owned and disposed by Volvo Cars Ghent. The Wincanton-Kerry Logistics joint venture will offer customers a single logistics solution, covering their land, sea and air requirements, from manufacturing plants in the Far East through to stores across Europe and vice versa. With a substantial portfolio of medium to large corporations, Kerry Logistics serves customers in sectors such as retail and lifestyle consumer goods, electronics, mechanical engineering and automotive. This sector expertise fits well with Wincanton's extensive blue-chip customer base across Europe. Kerry Logistics provides a range of logistics services including freight forwarding, express parcel delivery, contract logistics, warehousing, distribution, trading, merchandising and a wide variety of value added services. In China, Kerry operates with 4,000 staff from 120 offices, offering Pan China solutions. In total, Kerry Logistics operates in more than 180 cities in 23 countries including Greater China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, Korea, Thailand, India, Australia, UK, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, France, USA, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, with 5,800 staff and managing more than 1.1 million m2 of warehouses, logistics centres and port facilities worldwide. With the increasing demand for products manufactured and sourced in Asia, joint ventures are the quickest way for European-based logistics providers that do not have global service capabilities to meet customer requirements. Wincanton’s move follows that of Christian Salvesen, who in a JV with APL Logistics in December 2005, established Holistica Solutions to offer customers end-to-end supply chain solutions.
