Friday 24th November 2006 – This week's Logistics Bulletin reports on the acquisition of the Span International Group of Companies by UTi Worldwide, which has strengthened UTi's contract logistics operations in the US and Mexico. Other news from the US includes OH Logistics reorganising its company structure around its service offering, whilst ProLogis has leased 65,032 m2 of distribution space in southern California to Broyhill Furniture Industries.
In China, METRO has awarded Sinotrans a contract to operate its dry-food and non-food distribution and together the two companies will establish METRO's Procurement Logistics Solutions, a service which will be extended to other retailers in the country. Elsewhere in China, Eimskip and the Qingdao Port Group have signed a Letter of Intent to build a cold store at the port, which will be largest cold store in the country.
In Europe, among contract wins reported this week is Kuehne + Nagel winning a three year deal with Grundfos, whilst Bibby Distribution has won new business with Parlane International and DHL Exel Supply Chain is to operate a warehouse for BPB Iberplaco. Under the deal, Sinotrans will become METRO Jinjiang's sole dry-food and non-food logistics operator in China. This will entail Sinotrans forwarding products from approximately 1,000 suppliers to METRO’s 33 retail outlets across China.
The Sinotrans contract win has ended a month long bidding race between multinational and local logistics providers to become the Company’s dry-food and non-food forwarder in China. The contract term is for an indefinite period. METRO Group Logistics has developed a tailor-made logistics solution for retail operators named Procurement Logistics, a programme that has already proved successful in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Turkey, Russia and Spain, and will now be introduced to China and operated by Sinotrans.
Since its entry into the Chinese market, METRO has been adjusting its logistics management on goods delivery, operating a model whereby suppliers either deliver goods directly to stores or to a distribution centre from where they are forwarded on. As the number of METRO outlets in China expand, the Company needs to streamline its goods-delivery system, which is why the Procurement Logistics solutions are being introduced to the country.
Under the deal, Sinotrans will build a logistics network of nine warehouses and will identify transport routes so that the Company’s 33 stores are covered. The network will provide a stable and economic logistics services for METRO. As part of the contract, the procurement logistics network, which will be jointly built by Sinotrans and METRO, will not only serve METRO but also other retailers and suppliers in China who wish to join the network; sharing operating costs and risks.
Elsewhere this week:
UTi Worldwide strengthens contract logistics with acquisition http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2041
The State of the Netherlands sells its shares in TNT http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2044
Bibby Distribution wins business with Parlane International http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2042
Kuehne + Nagel wins three year contract with Grundfos http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2047
DHL Exel Supply Chain wins warehouse management contract in Spain http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2051
Eimskip and Qingdao Port Group to build China's largest Mono-Unit cold store http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2048
ProLogis leases warehouse to Broyhill Furniture Industries http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2043
Logista completes construction of its logistics complex in Leganés http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2049
NYK Logistics appoints IT Director http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2045
Ozburn-Hessey Logistics restructures organisation http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2050
Lockheed Martin forms new organisation to develop turn-key supply chain solutions http://www.analytiqa.com/newsitem.aspx?articleid=2052
