This week's Logistics Bulletin reports on M&A activity, contract wins, DC developments and legislative issues from around the globe. The year has started with a number of M&A, joint venture and even insolvency developments. US-based freight forwarder EGL has received a buy-out offer from their founder, valuing the Company at around US$1.46 billion. Also in the US, Wilson Logistics has purchased Value Added Resources, BNSF Logistics has acquired a 3PL, whilst Lynden International and Kerry Logistics have established a joint-venture. In Europe, Deutsche Post has announced the sale of Vfw AG to Monitor Clipper Partners, GreenCarrier has joined forces in a venture with TIBA Internacional and a Thiel Logistik subsidiary files for insolvency.
In the Middle East, DHL Exel Supply Chain has won a 10-year multi-million-dollar contract with the world's number one crude oil producer, Saudi Aramco. In other developments, expansion appears to be the order of the day, with Schenker building a new DC in Bulgaria, ProLogis developing a facility for Michelin in south-western France.
2007 is set to be a key year for supply chain environmental issues and 'green logistics' makes it mark immediately with the WEEE Directive finally launching in the UK and with Wal-Mart successfully trialling Hydrogen fuel cell-powered pallet trucks in the US. EGL receive buy-out offer 02 January 2007 - EGL has announced that its board of directors has received a letter from James R. Crane, the Company's largest shareholder (and founder of the Company in 1984), Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board and General Atlantic LLC, that he and General Atlantic LLC propose to acquire all of the outstanding equity interests of the Company for US$36.00 per share (around or about US$1.46 billion). Mr. Crane presently beneficially owns approximately 18.0% of the Company's outstanding common stock. The Company's Board of Directors has formed a Special Committee of independent directors to review and evaluate the proposal. The committee has engaged independent legal counsel and will engage independent financial advisors to assist it with its work. The Board of Directors cautions the Company's stockholders and others considering trading in its securities that it has only received the proposal and that no decisions have been made by the Board of Directors with respect to the Company's response to the proposal.
