The 21st Century version of ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’ is being put to the test. St. Richard’s Hospital in, Chichester, West Sussex, under threat of being downsized but a new Text petition has been started to fight the mighty sword of the Strategic Heath Authority with the help of local firm SendMyTxt Ltd.
St. Richard’s Hospital has won many awards over the past years. It was voted the top hospital in the South East by the Dr Foster’s Guide, is the holder of the most consistent top hospital award without leaving the top 40 in 6 years (CHKS), and for the third time has won the UNICEF Global baby friendly award as well as being in the top band for performance for clinical and patient targets. SendMyTxt has offered it’s full support and help in the campaign fight to support and save St. Richard’s from being downgraded from a Major Acute Hospital to a Local General. The downsizing would result in the closure of the Accident & Emergency service, closure of the Intensive Care Unit, an end to any emergency operations, plus closure of the Maternity unit and Paediatric services. These closures would mean many thousands of residents would have to travel outside of their county for these essential services resulting in higher costs and an extra 25 minute trip on top of the already 30 minute journey for some. Chichester-based SendMyTxt a UK market leader in mobile messaging solutions, have given support to the campaign by setting up a text message petition, allowing local residents and supporters for the campaign to show their support, and receive the latest updates – all at the cost of just one normal text to the mobile user and free of charge to the campaign organizers. SendMyTxt’s Commercial Director Tony Coyne, who himself was born at St Richard’s and has twice had his life saved by the skilled staff at the hospital says “The decision is being made at the end of July by the SHA so time is of the essence. We need to make sure everyone in the area knows about the proposed plans and help save St. Richard’s. Organising a petition via SMS text message has been proven as highly successful on previous campaigns, both in the UK and across the world, and with the mobile being the most empowering tool everyone has in their pocket we felt it’s the least we could do to help save this essential local resource.” He added “the petition is just the start and we hope to encourage everyone to write to their local Member of Parliament.” The service is made as simple as possible for all supporters, Text: SRH (space) name and postcode and send it to 63100*The details of the supporter will be added to the petition that will be presented to the local MP’s and the SHA. The supporters will also receive updated details of the campaign directly to their phone at no cost to them.*text message charged at normal network rate **** END **** Notes to Editor For more information on the St Richard’s Hospital Support campaign contact Support St. Richard’s Campaign c/o CMEC, St Richard’s Hospital, Spitalfield Lane, Chichester.
