Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) of India, the seventh largest telecommunications operator in the world and Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), Sri Lanka’s flagship communications provider today inaugurated the Bharat Lanka optical fibre submarine cable between India and Sri Lanka. This cable system already established between Tuticorin (India) and Mount Lavinia (Sri Lanka).

Sri Lanka Telecom is on a mission to enhance Sri Lanka’s competitiveness in the world and is fast becoming a global player in the telecommunication arena. With world class telecommunication infrastructure, both domestic and international, SLT has been laying a robust foundation for Sri Lanka’s industries both locally and internationally. Today, our domestic core network consists of optical fibre rings capable of handling gigantic volumes of data and SLT’s international connectivity is well positioned to transfer data at the speeds of terabyte per second which would facilitate any business. We at SLT are in the process of evolving our core network to an NGN [Next Generation Network] which would support multiple services on single network as opposed to conventional multiple services on multiple network architecture. SLT’s access network is expanding at an unprecedented growth rate enabling broadband on wire line and wireless access. Bharat-Lanka Cable will be seamlessly connected to SLT’s domestic network and its international connectivity which include SEA-ME-WE 3 and SEA-ME-WE 4 optical fibre submarine cables and multiple satellite connectivity for Sri Lanka to become regional telecommunication facilitator.
The commissioning of this cable, both Indian and Sri Lankan customers would benefit by competitive international Private Leased Circuits (IPLCs), Broadband Internet, direct and transit International Direct Dialing (IDD) traffic, Internet Protocol (IP) backbone networks, and multimedia content services etc. The cable will increase BSNL’s connectivity and could create substantial bandwidth and both the companies can inter-connect their IP-MPLS (IP based multi protocol label switching) network to facilitate Global VPN services of the valuable customers.
In addition, the customers at the Sri Lankan side of the cable will have better connectivity enabling added access to multimedia content and broadband services such as movies, music, etc. while actual real-time audio and video streaming facilities will be further enhanced.
The commissioning of this cable will allow for another avenue of redundancy to SLT, which will further secure existing connections, such as this link’s predecessor SEA ME WE 3, SEA ME WE 4 and other on hand line-of-sight microwave links.
The new cable capacity will also lead to a further extension of the broadband capability of the IP backbone network, which will allow for higher speeds and better effectiveness in transfers between two countries. Superior reliability and greater connectivity will also be effects of adding this cable’s capabilities to SLT’s existing network.
The commissioning of the cable system comes in the wake of the agreement which was signed between BSNL and SLT last year, for a submarine cable system between the two countries and the Construction and Maintenance Agreement was also signed last year.
In addition this joint venture would provide an invaluable platform for further development and the initiation of many business partnerships and relations between the two neighbouring companies.

This project historically would be the biggest joint investment between India and Sri Lanka and would be a manifestation of corporation and strong links that bind these two countries together.
Value additions to Sri Lanka in brief
Telephone - International voice
  • IDD - International traffic handling of SAARC countries. (Both incoming/outgoing traffic of the SAARC countries)
  • Handling Indian voice/data traffic to other regions of the world. SLT already connected globally via SMW3 & SMW4 cable systems
  • BSNL is having strong national backbone to connect other SAARC countries which gives Sri Lanka reliable connectivity.
  • BLC has very high bandwidth [10 gigabits per second which will later be upgraded quickly to a maximum of 160 gigabits per second] and more connectivity options via Sri Lanka
Internet
  • Connectivity to internet by providing high bandwidth & diversified services
  • To provide internet based services both the ISP’s of the companies can interconnect their networks.
  • It gives mutual network redundancy for both the companies
Multimedia
  • Broadband multimedia content can be introduce like movies, cultural programs by high speed video streaming
  • SLT now working on IPTV project. For the IPTV service we can get lot more content from Indian side.
Data
  • IPLC & IPVPN services [multinational companies can connect their branches out side the country to the same network]
  • BSNL-SLT MPLS interconnection
  • IP-MPLS network can interconnect and facilitate Global VPN services to the customers of both the companies
