The new’ liberation’ of top-level domain names registration, (announced by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), following their annual meeting in Paris) has been slammed by PeOKa.com, the world’s only Go Direct search engine company, as a backward step which is bound to create more problems than it solves.

“I believe the limitations and restrictions in using the current top-level domain names (TLD) could have been addressed without resulting to a free-for-all approach as taken by ICANN,” explained David Akande, CEO of PeOKa.com.  With this new liberation, as there are no restrictions to who can buy which name, (provided they have the proposed US$100,000), domain name speculators (name brokers) will have a field day buying as many names as possible for the sole purpose of reselling them to their “rightful” owners. The people at PeOKa believe many international brand owners will not take up this new offer, because in a period of market downturn, the last thing they are interested in is confusing their customers. Currently, on the internet, major brands’ websites and specific products can be reached by internet users (without using their domain names!), simply by doing what thousands of other people are doing - having a search toolbar like the PeOKa.com toolbar, where they can type in their required brand or product and click Go Direct to go directly to the website or webpage. David said, “It is unlikely that internet users will be queuing up to use what can turn out to be a  lengthy, complicated new top-level domain name such as drinks.cocacola, when they can now simply type in Coca Cola or Coke in the Peoka.com toolbar sitting on their browsers.
