Dooradoyle, Limerick, Monday 26th November 2007 – Veteran journalist Arthur Quinlan and the 2007 Limerick Senior Camogie Team have been officially recognised by Limerick County Council at a Civic Reception this evening.
Mr. Quinlan was honoured for his more than fifty years as a journalist in the Midwest, while the Camogie players and their mentors were honoured for winning the County's first ever Senior All-Ireland Championship title last month. Speaking at the County Hall ceremony, Cllr. Kevin Sheahan, Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, said, "A Civic Reception is the highest accolade at the disposal of the Local Authority for any individual, group or organisation. Those who are being honoured are being formally recognised not only for their outstanding achievements but their position as role models for others in their respective fields." The Limerick Camogie team took their first ever Senior All-Ireland Camogie championship title in the Gala All-Ireland Senior B decider at Páirc Uí Rinn last month. Defeating Cork in the replayed final, Limerick secured All Ireland victory for the County less than a month after the Limerick hurling team went down to Kilkenny in the Senior All Ireland Championship Final. Commenting on the team's success, Cllr. Sheahan stated, "I congratulate Aoife Sheehan as captain, the team, panel, trainers, coaches, selectors and back room staff because I know that the winning of an All Ireland title is not done on the day of battle. The extensive training and many hours of planning that is required by the players and their mentors to win an All Ireland title begins months beforehand and often goes unrecognised." "By defeating Cork in last month's replayed final, the team became a source of pride for not only supporters of Limerick Camogie but Limerick people all over the world. Their success also reinvigorated supporters across the County and beyond by securing All Ireland victory less than a month after the heroic Limerick hurling team were defeated in the All Ireland Final", he added. Congratulating Arthur Quinlan, the Cathaoirleach described his professional integrity as the cornerstone of his success. According to Cllr. Sheahan, "If one week is a long time in politics, then over fifty years in journalism must seem like an eternity. Yet for Arthur, he never lost sight of his duties as a journalist to seek truth and provide a fair and comprehensive account of events and issues. More significantly, he never lost his passion for reporting." "Arthur has repeatedly turned the eyes of the world on this region with his many interviews with world leaders and celebrities as they passed through Shannon Airport. This in itself is an outstanding and unrivalled achievement. In recognition of his contribution to journalism I am delighted to see that he was recently made a 'Member Of Honour' of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), such an honour being indicative of the great respect that fellow professionals have for him", continued Cllr. Sheahan. Arthur Quinlan worked for many years as the Mid-West correspondent for the Irish Times, and was the editor of the now defunct Limerick Weekly Echo. During his career he interviewed many world leaders, including Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, US President Harry Truman, Soviet leader Andrey Vyshinsky, King Peter of Yugoslavia, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, the Duke Of Edinburgh and Queen Juliana of Holland. He also famously taught Cuban leader Fidel Castro how to make an Irish coffee and is the only western journalist to have interviewed Che Guevara. As a keen sportsman, Mr Quinlan is a former captain of Castletroy Golf Club and has been a member of Shannon Rowing Club since 1948. In 2003, a ceremony was held marking the naming of the clubhouse slipway at Sarsfield Bridge after the now honorary life member of the club. -ENDS- Note to Editor: For further information please contact Mark Dunphy of Dunphy Public Relations on 086-8534900 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Mark Dunphy Dunphy Public Relations Clonboula, Connolly, Ennis, County Clare IRELAND www.dunphypr.com This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it 00353-868534900 (Mobile) 00353-656839692 (Fax) |
