EU Medal Tracker at the 2008 Olympic Games
Written by Armin Czysz

If we add up all the medals won by the EU member states at the 2008 Olympic Games, the EU leads, followed by China. The website www.medaltracker.eu offers to convinced Europeans the possibility of being informed about the sporting strength of the EU. There, the current Olympics results are converted into European results.

A common EU medals table at the Olympic Games shall appeal to "the heart and gut feeling of the people” in Europe. In July, the top EU-Official Georg Doutlik sent a letter to the media representatives expressing this hope. "This could produce a certain pride for Europe and generate a positive perception, which we need so desperately." His idea was picked up by the editorial board of the Internet portal "EU-Info.de”. The EU’s results at the Olympics in Beijing are published daily on www.medaltracker.eu.

The national Olympic Committees do not like to hear the thoughts about the EU Medals table. Indeed, the ranking does not really correspond to the act of sporting fairness: A single EU team would obtain much less starting places than 27 separately fighting national teams - with correspondingly lower opportunities.
