Dream Turns into Reality for TCG Motorsport BSB Official Test Snetterton, 23rd-25th March 2007
The weekend of 7th-9th of April 2007 sees the realisation of a dream as TCG Motorsport starts its first full season of Motorcycle racing at British Championship level, in association with established BSB team HAWK Kawasaki. TCG will be running the HAWK Kawasaki Junior team alongside the existing Superbike set-up, with riders Dave Hallett and Jak Wright competing in the Metzeler Racetec National Superstock Cup and British Supersport Cup respectively. The team recently spent its first weekend testing with HAWK Kawasaki, at Snetterton and despite some cold and wet weather, significant progress was made in establishing working practices and getting used to the new bikes. Fortunately the weather improved towards the end of the test and the riders were able to spend some time working on some base settings and trying some adjustments to see what effect they had on the bikes. 20-year-old Dave Hallett will be competing on a 2007 Kawasaki ZX-10 in the Metzeler Racetec Superstock Cup. He joined TCG Motorsport 2006, raced in the MRO Dyna-Pro MiniTwin series and helped the team to develop a Kawasaki ER-6 into a competitive race bike in a field dominated by Suzuki SV650s. During the season he recorded wins and podium finishes in North Gloucester and MRO MiniTwin races, and is the current MiniTwin lap record holder at Mallory Park and Darley Moor. Hallett was typically enthusiastic about the Snetterton test. “We’ve mainly been spending our track time getting a feel for the HAWK ZX-10,” he commented. It’s heavier and has more than twice the power of the ER-6 I raced last year, so I’ve been working out how to adjust my riding style to suit the bike. I can tell you that it certainly spins up well in the wet though!” TCG are also pleased to welcome 18-year-old Jak Wright into the team. He also raced a MiniTwin last season, finishing second in the MRO Dyna-Pro MiniTwin championship, scored 17 wins along the way. He is also the MiniTwin lap record holder at the Brands Hatch GP circuit. This year he will race a HAWK Kawasaki ZX-6R in the British Supersport Cup. “It’s awesome riding alongside racers that I watched on TV last season,” enthused Jak. “Even so it’s been a bit frustrating as the team hasn’t let me and Dave off the leash yet, and they kept our feet on the ground by making us clean the bikes after the wet session on Saturday!” Technical Director Chris Martin expressed his satisfaction after his first weekend working with HAWK Kawasaki, saying “The boys were under instructions just to get a feel for the bikes and the surroundings today, so they got a bit frustrated, especially when we switched off the screens to stop them checking their times! We spent a bit of time trying some different settings to help Dave and Jak learn how the balance of the bike changed: they both gave excellent feedback, so we’ve managed to establish some good base settings for the start of the season proper at Brands Hatch. TCG Team Principal Gavin Wheeler was delighted to have achieved one of the team’s major goals. “When we set up TCG Motorsport we did so with the intention of competing in a national race series. We’ve had a taste of it this weekend and now the first round at Brands Hatch can’t come soon enough! It feels like all the hard work of the last couple of years is beginning to pay off. Thanks a lot to everyone who has helped us get this far.” HAWK Team Owner Stuart Hicken was happy with the weekend saying “The weather didn’t prove to be a problem for us as it allowed us to try a number of different settings out on the four bikes. We know which direction we are heading in now and know what we have to do to get there. We are going to try and get out again before Brands as we have a significant amount of new parts to test before the racing starts. I’m pleased with the two youngsters, David and Jak, they took things steady but I feel have learnt a lot in just the one weekend. I’m looking forward to the season and hoping all the riders will have a good one.” The first BSB round takes place at Brands Hatch in Kent on Easter weekend, April 7th, 8th and 9th. Look out for Dave (#178) in the Metzeler Racetec National Superstock Cup, and Jak (#9) in British Supersport races. Report by Jon Tanner About TCG Motorsport TCG Motorsport was established in 2005 to identify and maximise the potential of young and talented motorcycle racers, with the ultimate goal of competing at National or International level. In 2005, TCG helped Tom Gazzard to achieve 3rd place in the BMCRC Rookie 600 Championship, and Stewart Willetts to 7th place in the BMCRC Clubman 1000 series. In 2006 the team competed in the MRO Dyna-Pro MiniTwin Championship with rider David Hallett, racing and developing a Kawasaki ER-6 in a class dominated by the Suzuki SV650. David finished in 10th place despite missing 2 rounds. Highlights of the season included several podium finishes, a pole position and a lap record at Mallory Park. The team also entered a meeting run by the North Gloucester Racing Club, scoring 2 race wins and a class lap record at the Darley Moor circuit. This year TCG Motorsport will be running Hawk Kawasaki Junior team, continuing to support Dave Hallett, racing in the Metzeler Racetec National Superstock Cup on a Kawasaki ZX-10. Jak Wright has also joined the team and will compete in the British Supersport Cup on a Kawasaki ZX-6R You can visit www.tcgmotorsport.co.uk |
