Dooradoyle, Limerick, Friday 9th November 2007 - Limerick County Council has announced that it will hold a Civic Reception next month honouring the achievements of veteran local journalist Arthur Quinlan and the 2007 Limerick Senior Camogie Team. Mr. Quinlan is being honoured for his more than fifty years as a journalist in the Midwest, while the Camogie players and their mentors are being honoured for winning the County's first ever Senior All-Ireland Championship title last month. The Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council will host the Civic Reception in County Hall at 4.30pm on Monday, 26th November 2007. Cllr. Kevin Sheahan said that a Civic Reception is the highest accolade at the disposal of Limerick County Council for any individual, group or organisation. "This Civic Reception is being held in celebration of the achievements of the Limerick Senior Camogie team and Arthur Quinlan, who have both represented Limerick with distinction at national level", added the Cathaoirleach. Cllr. Sheahan continued, "The Camogie Team has further enhanced Limerick's proud sporting tradition and ability to compete at the top level. Mr. Quinlan, meanwhile, has repeatedly turned the eyes of the world on this region with his many interviews with world leaders and celebrities as they passed through Shannon Airport." Arthur Quinlan worked for many years as the Mid-West correspondent for the Irish Times, and was the editor of the now defunct Limerick Weekly Echo. During his career he interviewed many world leaders, including Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, US President Harry Truman, Soviet leader Andrey Vyshinsky, King Peter of Yugoslavia, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, the Duke Of Edinburgh and Queen Juliana of Holland. He also famously taught Cuban leader Fidel Castro how to make an Irish coffee and is the only western journalist to have interviewed Che Guevara. As a keen sportsman, Mr Quinlan is a former captain of Castletroy Golf Club and has been a member of Shannon Rowing Club since 1948. In 2003, a ceremony was held marking the naming of the clubhouse slipway at Sarsfield Bridge after the now honorary life member of the club. Quinlan was recently made a 'Member Of Honour' of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ). The Limerick Camogie team, meanwhile, took their first ever Senior All-Ireland Camogie championship title in the Gala All-Ireland Senior B decider at Páirc Uí Rinn last month. Defeating Cork in the replayed final, Limerick secured All Ireland victory for the County less than a month after the heroic Limerick Hurling team went down to Kilkenny in the Senior All Ireland Championship Final. -ENDS- Note to Editor: Members of the media are invited to attend the upcoming Civic Reception.
