CANTONA STILL MOST POPULAR FOOTBALLER IN UK

11 years after his premature retirement from the game at the age of 30, Manchester United legend Eric Cantona is still proving the largest draw in football.

London, UK (May 8, 2008) – Football fans across the country have shown their love for the player dubbed King Eric is still as strong as ever.  After a recent signing session with leading signed football memorabilia company Icons.com, the company has announced that sales of the classic 1990’s Manchester United home shirt have outsold usual top-selling signed shirts by more than ten to one.

After being voted Manchester United’s Player of the Century in a 2001 poll, it is perhaps unsurprising that fans have flocked to purchase such a genuinely rare item of football memorabilia.  Also, when taking into account Cantona’s near disappearance from the public spotlight over the last decade, fans seem aware that this opportunity may not present itself again any time soon.

While Cantona may not have the trophies to challenge other legends of yestayear such as Pele and Diego Maradona, and is not pitting his wits against current heroes such as Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres, the sales of his autographed shirts in comparison to these other Icons shows the true legacy that the mercurial Frenchman has left behind.

Icons.com was founded in 1999 to provide personal websites for leading footballers including Ryan Giggs, Dennis Bergkamp and Henrik Larsson.  The signed memorabilia arm of the company followed shortly after utlising relationships that Icons had built with players.
