Amity Students cross new frontiers- NASA beckons |

It was a momentous occasion when Amity SpaceSet Team comprising 12 students of Amity International School, Saket was declared finalists for the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC) to be held at NASA’s Johnson Space Centre located at Houston, Texas (USA) in July 2007. To promote the scientific fervor and zeal amongst students Amity Aeronautics and Space Centre (AASC), under the aegis of Amity Science, Technology and Innovation Foundation (School Wing) , was launched in the presence of distinguished Prof. Yashpal- a veteran in Aerospace, Science and Technology by Dr. (Mrs.) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson – Ritnand Balved Education Foundation and Amity International Schools.
Inaugurating AASC and eulogizing the efforts of Amity Schools, Prof. Yashpal said that true to its philosophy Amity is nurturing the talent of the young scientific minds by providing them a platform to showcase their amazing, innovative and ingenious skills. It’s really nice to see an educational institution churning out such young and quality future astronauts. Dwelling on the scope of the involvement of youth in space related matters he further said that Indian youth is a repository of talent and they can bring laurels to their country provided their talent is given a proper vent. He citied the examples of Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams who have made a mark in the history of Aeronautics, Space Research and called upon the Amity SpaceSet Team to work diligently and create a history to reckon with. Dr. (Mrs) Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools, a true mentor at heart, applauded the efforts of students who have been putting in colossal efforts for the past three years to make it to the finals of this prestigious competition. Outlining the objectives of Amity Aeronautics and Space Centre (AASC) she further said that AASC will promote science, technology and innovation. The students with scientific bent of mind will be given due opportunities to come up with their creative, ingenious and innovative inventions and discoveries. She declared that in near future AASC will contribute to the growth and development of the country by providing world class aeronauts and scientists. Sharing her vision regarding Amity Science, Technology and Innovation Foundation with the students Dr. (Mrs) Amita Chauhan proudly said that India needs to produce many Noble Laureates and this initiative is just the beginning. A day would come when the entire globe, space as well as the ocean would have a large number of brilliant Indian Scientists as Researchers and help build India a super power. The members of Amity SpaceSet team spoke about their project and preparations for the impending Design Competition at NASA. The team comprises of eleven students namely Akshay Goel, Ankur Bakshi, Arani Chaudhuri, Amol Chauhan, Akshay Dutta, Gaurav Mishra, Kaustubh Banerjee, Ketan Sharma, Mayank Gureja, Riju Singh, Vatsal Jain and Mr. Pritish Kumar as advisor. The Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition (ARSSDC) was organized by NASA in Gurgaon, India in which Amity SpaceSet Team emerged as undisputed winners. The qualifying round of this competition required the students to create a 40-page proposal which included precise details about the various factors that need to be tackled for constructing a space settlement. The proposal sent was competitive enough to be selected as one of the best amongst those sent from all over the world, and consequently the team will represent Asia at the International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC), organized by Boeing and Johnson Space Center at NASA, USA. The Amity SpaceSet Team is the first ever team from Delhi to qualify for the concluding stage of this prestigious competition which has a history of 23 years and is rated as world’s toughest competition of its kind.
