Grammy award winning gospel artists, ‘Mary Mary’, will be flying into Manchester for the first time ever in April to perform at a concert organised to send out a positive message to young people. With increasing concerns of rising gun and drug related crimes, as well as alcohol abuse amongst young people, a Christian community group set up by young people has pulled out all the stops to bring the international gospel artists to Manchester. The community group, ‘He Lives’ has organised the high profile event based on the belief that gospel music can play a major part in bringing a solution to many problems faced by young people in Manchester today.
With a recognised upsurge of young people turning to Christianity, encouraged by modern gospel artists using R’n’B and Hip hop to get their message across, members of He Lives believe that the concert will have an evident impact on many young people. As part of an ongoing project, ‘He Lives’, have invited Mary Mary to perform at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton. One of the songs they are expected to perform will be their UK top ten single, Shackles (Praise you). An audience of up to 2000 people aged 16 – 30 are expected to attend the event. ‘Mary Mary’ use their music to encourage young people to look on the positive aspects life, and being good role models themselves, their message has been well received all over the world by young people.Working closely with other teams concerned with youth crime, such as Charisma and The Street Pastors, and in partnership with ‘Hope Greater Manchester’; He Lives plans to use the concert as a catalyst for further positive activities within the community. With gospel music at the forefront, He lives aims to provide music and arts workshops, as well as hosting other high profile events to inspire a more positive outlook for young people. They also hope to develop many young people’s untapped talents and provide a forum for them to showcase their skills in music and other aspects of performance.Pastor of the Calvary Church in central Manchester and ‘He Lives’ Grand Patron Dr Emmanuel Olatoye sends out this message to the government in regards to the young people’s agenda, “The government, local agencies and police have tried everything in their power to address the growing issues the UK faces with young people turning to gun and drug related crimes. It’s time we take a different approach. The decline of Christian principles in British society has attributed to the decline of positively motivated young people. Our young people are angry, and they vent their anger by kicking against societal norms. This concert has not been organised to make “conversions” of young people but rather to involve young people in something that is positive, inspiring and thought provoking”. ###Ends### Notes to editor:1. ‘He Lives’ is a voluntary organisation set by young people for young people 4 years ago.
