The long-awaited Open Skies Agreement between Australia and the United States is now a reality. This comes as good news for those considering investment property in Australia, which currently ranks as the world’s 8th most popular tourism destination – a figure which is only likely to grow. The busy trans-Pacific route will be able to determine the number and frequency of its routes which, until now, were restricted to just four flights a week for new airlines, without government interference. Designated airlines will now be able to operate unlimited services between Australia and the USA. Australian Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, explained in statement that, “The United States is Australia’s third largest aviation market and this agreement removes restrictions on Australian and US airlines starting routes between the two countries and beyond to third countries.” Currently only two airlines, Australia’s Qantas and America’s United Airlines, fly this Pacific route, with 48 and 14 weekly services accordingly. Qantas chief executive officer, Geoff Dixon, welcomes the outcome: “Importantly, it will assist the further development of Australia’s aviation industry, as well as help increase trade and tourism with a major economic partner.” Mr. Dixon goes on to explain that the airline will be increasing its services between the two countries as of next month: “The Qantas group is currently operating at its highest-ever frequency on the Pacific route and will increase to 51 services per week as from March.” Award-winning property website, Propertyshowrooms.com recently registered increased interest in the Commonwealth country, with almost 20,000 unique visitors between October 07 and February 08 viewing pages on Australian property.
