 PRESS RELEASE- IMMEDIATE

European Year of the Intercultural Dialogue (EYID) 2008 – FEM EU LINK - WALES CONFERENCE

FATIMA Women’s Network is the largest of the seven UK projects funded under Plan D EYID. There will be four major conferences held in England, Scotland, N. Ireland and Wales to bring together diverse communities to discuss and debate the role of the EU and other agencies; what it means to be a Citizen of Europe particularly from the perspective of young people and women; migration and climate change.

The first in the series of conferences is to take place at the Senedd on 8th April, where the guest speaker Ann Jones Welsh Assembly member and & Chair of the Equality of Opportunity Committee will open the conference. The Welsh Refugee Council, Wales Women's National Coalition and People & Planet are working in partnership with FATIMA Women’s Network to bring European Year of Intercultural Dialogue to Welsh citizens.

According to the European Commission, the aim of the EYID is to inspire Europeans to celebrate their own culture, connect with others in Europe and the wider world, in order to foster tolerance and respect.  The European Treaty gives the EU the task of creating a closer union between the people of Europe and working for the respect of the diversity. Moreover, the enlargement of Europe, the migrations flows, the increase of the mobility and the globalization in general have increased the interaction between European citizens and the various cultures, languages, ethnic groups and religions in Europe and elsewhere. With a budget of €10 million, the European Year for Intercultural Dialogue the stated aim of the Year is to aid this process of communication between cultures. It will foster dialogue in education, training and in the workplace but also in leisure, cultural, sport centers and civil society organisations.  The EYID was established by Decision No 1983/2006/EC on 18 December 2006.  ·The approach of the European Commission relates mainly to culture and education but it does not explicitly address gender-related issues. Even though ID clearly has a gender perspective. FATIMA Women’s Network will work to readdress this issue in the planned conferences across the UK, using the EYID as a good mechanism to voice, expose and condemn those practices that violate women’s rights and silence women’s voices wherever they may be.  European Women’s Lobby refers to those areas in which “cultural and religious practice and in some instance, legal practices, continue systematically to discriminate against women and the girl child either directly or indirectly, excluding them from public and political life, denying them equal rights to economic independence, including in marriage, divorce and inheritance and denying women’s rights to autonomy in matters of sexual and reproductive choice and health. All of these practices should be named for what they are, i.e. violations of women’s human rights, and should never be placed within a cultural context that at the end of the day conceals the reality.”   -------------------------------------------------ENDS-------------------------------------------------------------    PRESS CONTACT:Ms Jazz Dudial(M) 07944 176 106 (E) This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  NOTES TO EDITORS:
