North County resident, Effie Horning, has been selected by President George Bush as a Daily Point of Light. This award is in conjunction with the Corporation for national Service, the Points of Light Foundation and the Knights of Columbus.
Congratulations to Effie Horning of Oceanside, California. Ms. Horning has been selected by President George Bush as a Daily Point of Light. This award is in conjunction with the Corporation for national Service, the Points of Light Foundation and the Knights of Columbus. Each year, over 100 million persons in this country volunteer their time, talent and energy. These civic leaders seek to solve social problems as well as build stronger communities. The Daily Points of Light program is a way to recognize one of these persons. This award is given each weekday to only one individual or organization that is making a positive and lasting difference in the lives of others. This award was first instituted by Former President George W Bush. The program was reinstated on January 1, 1998 by the Points of Light Foundation, the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Knights of Columbus. Presidents Bill Clinton and Bush chose the initial two recipients jointly. Effie is designated as the Daily Point of Light for June 27, 2007. Her profile and photos may be viewed by logging onto www.pointsoflight.org/awards/dpol Ms. Horning has served the community for over 35 years as a volunteer and medical professional. On many occasions, she has utilized her medical acumen on a volunteer basis to further the needs of the local and international communities. Examples of such service are her work with CPR Super Saturday with the Red Cross, camp nurse for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Red Crosses "Healthy Kids Fair." A long term child advocate and foster/adoptive parent, Effie volunteers her time and professional counseling skills to those who have fertility issues or seek information on adoption. As an ordained and minister she provides both secular and non-secular examples and information to her clients. Not your average nurse, Ms. Horning is a beauty queen who uses the celebrity status afforded her international titles as a means of pursuing further community endeavors. She incorporates further community involvement through encouragement of the public while at these events. Recently, she spoke on the difference between being a cancer "survivor" and one who thrives beyond the diagnosis in front of over 80,000 people at the Revlon run/walk for women. As a 16 year cancer survivor, she combines her personal and professional experiences to assist others through her "Crowns for the Cure." This international philanthropic organization seeks to "cure the stigma, fear and disease of breast cancer." Through her resources as a chemotherapy licensed nurse, Effie obtained the Gail Model, a breast cancer risk assessment tool, and has made it available to the public through her foundation's website at www.crownsforthecure.com.
