Arthur Wood – ex-soldier, businessman, historian, writer and octogenarian tells how, at 83, he finally began the career of his dreams. Arthur Wood’s story began as a 19 year old soldier serving in World War II. It was that war which inspired him to produce, at an extraordinary rate, the three books than now comprise his writing portfolio with a fourth book on the verge of publication. Arthur talks about what inspired him to write at this point in his life. “I have always known that I had a number of books in me just waiting to be written” he explains. “After 65 years of soldiering and working I finally had the time to write three”. After leaving the army, Arthur worked as an international engineer and salesman working in heavy industry all over the world but principally in Eastern and Western Europe, America, India and the Middle East. During this time he was constantly gathering the material and experience that was to comprise the works that he finally got to produce after retirement. His first book was “A Huckster – Fifty Years on the roads of Europe and elsewhere” which is a memoir of his working life and travels. Inspired by his experiences as a soldier, his first book is a testimony of a changing post war world as he tells of his travelling life making his way through Western and Eastern Europe, behind the Iron Curtain, American, India and the Middle East.” As my first book it was the easiest to write. By then I was a frustrated writer and I had all the research that had been building up for over 50 years. I completed it in 13 weeks! Paul of Tarsus” had a different birth. July 18^th 1961 found me along at 4:30 am at the top of the Acropolis in Athens watching the dawn break. Standing on the Hill of Mars I imagined Paul addressing a large crowd of scoffing Greeks in about AD50. On leaving 2 hours later the idea of writing about his man and his explosive influence on Christianity was conceived on the spot on which Paul had stood. It was written 43 years later”. For the third of his books he returns to the domestic territories of Scotland and Ireland and the lives of 250,000 Ulsterman and their families who left Northern Ireland, Ulster for America. In “From the Shankhill to the Shenandoah – The Scotch Irish in America” he explores the journey that the Ulsterman made between 1710 and 1785. “The Ulster Scotch were Celts who had originally left Ireland for Scotland 1000 years earlier. They returned in 1610 persuaded by King James I to form the plantation of Ulster and provide a defence against the Catholic native Irish, and French Invasions. Their move to America didn’t make life any easier, times were initially hard and the climate unforgiving but it was an indication of their strength of character and their resilience, plus no interference from a hostile government that they came to prosper. Proof of their prosperity is shown through history. 17 of the 44 US presidents are able to claim Ulster ancestry and there are Scotch Irish names running through the ranks of great captains of industry and statesmen. The legacy of the Ulsterman is still strong in America today. The Scotch Irish-Brewed in Scotland, bottled in Ireland and uncorked in America!” Having already completed the research he hopes to start his 4^th book in spring 2007. Returning to the Anglo Irish who ruled Ireland from 1690 to about 1850 it’s working title is “100 Anglo Irish eccentrics and a few rogues”. Arthur’s writing passion remains undiminished. “The Anglo Irish were and remain a fascinating bunch and I intend to capture all the diverse characters and eccentricities of the time in my next book.
