The world’s first physiologically based technology that is capable of significantly reducing the risk of patient morbidity and mortality is to be launched at Arab Health 2008; the largest healthcare event in the Middle East held on January 28-31. The minimally invasive ‘HeartSmart’ haemodynamic monitoring software is used to optimise blood flow by providing virtually instantaneous readings for a number of important haemodynamic variables, including cardiac index and stroke volume. This leads to a reduction in post-operative complications and the length of stay in hospital - benefits that both save lives and potentially lead to a significant saving in healthcare costs. Available from UK based APC Cardiovascular, the software displays continuous real time information on all blood flow variables; using physiological parameters of heart rate, central venous pressure, blood pressure and core body temperature. This allows anaesthetists or medical staff to optimise the blood flow by way of goal directed therapy; determining the oxygen supply and demand required by the cells.HeartSmart can be easily introduced through all hospital departments with no additional equipment costs or change in nursing or medical practice; with only half a day’s training allowing healthcare professionals to perform the procedure. Dr Anthony Hughes, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Critical Care and Director of Intensive Care at Bradford Royal Infirmary where HeartSmart is used, said: “The HeartSmart adapts well to the busy working healthcare environment at Bradford Royal Infirmary, as it takes a short amount of time to train our staff in its use; lowering the risk of complications and thus, speeding up patient recovery time.” APC Cardiovascular, who are looking to source new distributors at Arab Health 2008, will be showcasing its range of innovative temporary and permanent pacing products at the event too.
