Reston, VA, February 12, 2007: Language and Computing, Inc. (L&C), a recognized leader of Natural Language Processing (NLP) solutions in the healthcare industry, has entered into an agreement with Kaiser Permanente’s Southern California Region to launch their co-development of a computer assisted coding (CAC) solution for the Evaluation and Management (“E&M”) coding process at the national Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) Annual Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans in February. The Product is being developed for use by the Southern California Permanente Medical Group in over 50 different medical specialties and integrated with the Epic electronic medical record system. The Product, named LinkE&M will be based on L&C’s proprietary ontology-based information extraction technology platform. The Product is also being designed for general market applicability and for use with any EMR system. The key benefits are ease of use and consistency in coding for the provider, a significant annual cost savings for the organization, and readily available statistically relevant standardized coding data for multiple uses. The product launching of LinkE&M at HIMSS will provide for family practice, general internal, general pediatrics and general emergency, whereas the other medical specialties will be commercially available in the course of 2007. Formal presentations will be daily at the HIMSS show detailing the LinkE&M robust capabilities by L&C and Kaiser. LinkE&M is being built on L&C’s existing patent-pending ontology assisted information extraction platform, thus giving Kaiser the ability to extend the use of the L&C technology beyond E&M coding to other text mining applications. Dr. Paul Minardi, MD, medical director of operations of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, said, “This product will assist us in gathering important medical and billing information. It will further optimize our work so that we can continue to provide quality care for the individuals and families that we serve.” Kaiser Permanente is America's leading integrated health plan. Founded in 1945, it is a nonprofit, group practice prepayment program with Southern California headquarters in Pasadena, California. Kaiser Permanente serves the health care needs of 3.2 million members in Southern California. Today it encompasses the nonprofit Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and their subsidiaries, and the for-profit Southern California Permanente Medical Group. Kaiser Permanente's Southern California Region includes more than 49,919 technical, administrative and clerical employees and caregivers, and more than 6,000 physicians representing all specialties. More information about Kaiser Permanente can be found at www.KaiserPermanente.org. L&C is a wholly owned subsidiary of Language and Computing N.V. of Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Belgium, which owns proprietary and patent-pending technology and other intellectual property for Natural Language Understanding (“NLU”), which is based on the amalgamation of linguistic technology, information technology and medical domain knowledge. While many technology companies active in healthcare and pharmaceuticals offer solutions based on Controlled Medical Vocabularies or Statistical Algorithms to work with clinical data, Language and Computing developed an innovative approach based on the latest Natural Language Processing technologies. L&C is the first company to turn advanced research in this field into action by creating commercial applications that appreciably outperform the older technologies.
