In probably what is a unique operation, a renal transplant patient suffering from Steroid induced osteonecrosis underwent the "Proxima hip replacement" in Chennai, India. The Proxima hip replacements are the latest innovation in hip replacements and offer several advantages over a traditional total hip replacement. In patients with advanced osteoarthritis and alteration of the bony archietecture of the head of the femur, it is still possible to do a Proxima hip rather than force down a Hip resurfacing which along with the former are examples of Bone preserving Hip replacements. The patient is a typical one in India with hip disease, Young and active.
A Young and active advocate in Chennai, India suffering from debilitating "osteonecrosis" or "Avascular necrosis"underwent a latest form of Hip replacement. Surgeons implanted an uncemented Proxima hip in the upper or Proxima part of the thigh bone or femur and resurfaced his acetabulum or cup with a large diamdeter metals socket. This metal on metal configuration has several advantages and is expected to last for more than 20 years. Dr.A.K.Venkatachalam, the chief surgeon who has the distinction of performing the first Proxima hip replacements in South India reported that the patient is recovering without any complications in hospital. Undertaking a total joint replacement in a Renal transplant patient is big risk as there is a siginificantly higher risk of infection due to the immunosuppressant drugs consumed by the patient to prevent rejection. This was possible due excellent support from the nephrologist, anesthetist and the preparedness of the surgical team. Young aand active patients suffering from Hip arthritis are not suitable candidates for the traditional "Total Hip replacement"as it involves removing a lot of native bone to implant the prosthesis. Moreover a THR has the ball made of metal implanted in a plastiv socket and is likely to dislocate when crossing legs. Wear from polyehtylene debris is likely to loosening of the joint within fifteen years. This is not suitable for the young patients in India and other countries as well. Indian Surgeons have won recognition for their erudition and skills. Influx of patients seeking value based Medical treatments" such as the "Proxima Hip and Hip resurfacing"are on the rise. Eviciton of Indian Doctors from the UK is likely to flare up the exodus of patients travelling abroad to centers of excellence like the Chennai Hip, Knee & Shoulder surgery centre. Dr.Venkatachalam a senior orthopedic surgeon has nearly fifteen years of experience with Hip replacements acquired during his training in the UK with top specialists in the North west and Cambridge. He has pioneered several orthopedic procedures like the Proxima Hip, High flex knee, mobile bearing High flex knee in India. |
