The depression ranged from moderate in good periods to severe, and it never left him - it was always there, haunting his life and the lives of those around him. “It was a horrible time,” says Nigel. “All the time it was like living in a black fog under a black cloud. I went to various GP's at different times, and the response is standard – prescribe the happy pills and then see if anything else can be done.” Nigel's wife Sue and their family had an equally difficult time. “Unless you have lived with someone who is severely depressed I think it would be difficult to imagine how devastating it is to the whole family,” she says. “To live with someone who doesn't speak to you for weeks on end, who has explosive mood swings and is unable to interact with you or your children can seem like a life sentence with no end.”. At one time Nigel was prescribed the SSRI (Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitor) type of antidepressant that was featured in the Daily Mail report on 26 February 2008, as well as other types of antidepressants at different times. Although the medication made the condition more bearable Nigel would not describe them as “happy pills”. “All they were doing was masking the symptoms rather than dealing with the root cause issues that had led to the depression in the first place. It was a bit like taking a cold remedy – it helps with the symptoms but doesn't cure the illness.”. The figures are alarming. According to the Mental Health Foundation:

-         1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year

-         Women are more likely to have been treated for a mental health problem than men -         About 10% of children have a mental health problem at any one time -         Depression affects 1 in 5 older people living in the community and 2 in 5 living in care homes -         British men are three times as likely as British women to die by suicide -         The UK has one of the highest rates of self harm in Europe, at 400 per 100,000 population -         Only one in 10 prisoners has no mental disorder -         1 in 4 British adults experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year, and one in six experiences this at any given time. -         Mixed anxiety & depression is the most common mental disorder in Britain, with almost 9 percent of people meeting criteria for diagnosis. -         Between 8-12% of the population experience depression in any year  Thankfully, Nigel is now free of this debilitating illness. After nearly twenty years of suffering he had the good fortune to attend a weekend event based around Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP ), Neurological Repatterning and hypnosis. Remarkably, after that one weekend he was completely free of the condition. “It was truly amazing,” he says. “I was the world's biggest sceptic and had no time for mumbo-jumbo or any of the faddy stuff. In fact, I had to be persuaded even to stay for the event.  When it was finished I could not believe that something that had plagued me for so long had been released in the space of a single weekend! I remember stopping what I was doing a day or two later and just listening to the silence inside my head, instead of the muddle and noise I had had for so long.” Sue was equally amazed. “The three days were a rollercoaster of emotions trying to convince Nigel to stay and work through it all but on the final day it was as though a lightbulb had been switched on in his head.  For the first time ever he stood up straight, made eye contact and had colour.  The difference since has been totally amazing and most importantly the children have got their Daddy back.” The transformation was so complete that Sue and Nigel decided to change direction completely and retrain in the processes and techniques that had made such a difference to him. Nigel left his job in the motor trade, and following the investment of substantial time and money they are fully qualified Master Practitioners of NLP, Neurolgical Repatterning and Master Hypnosis. “The idea was to give back the gift we had been given,” says Nigel. “The transformation was so complete and so fast that we felt that we had to be able to offer it to other people!”.  Anyone interested in talking to Sue or Nigel about how they can help with depression, and the alternative to “happy pills”, can visit the website at http://www.ultimatetransformation.co.uk or telephone 01884-861677.

Sue and Nigel Barker created Ultimate Transformation in East Worlington to offer the benefits of Hypnosis, Neuro Linguistic Programming and Neurological Repatterning to the people of Devon and the South West.
