BBC hopes for rain at Wimbledon
Monday, 26 June 2006
A rainy Wimbledon may be a tennis fan's worst nightmare, but BBC Radio Five Live will see it as an opportunity to shine as the network takes over Centre Court for a live on-air debate.

As soon as the heavens open, Five Live will broadcast a live show from the rain soaked Court as its team of former players and experts including Michael Stich and Pat Cash answer questions from the crowd and keep them entertained in between delays.

During normal play, former mixed doubles champion Leander Paes and former doubles champion Todd Woodbridge will join Radio Five Live's team of experts as presenters Simon Mayo and Clare Balding provide live coverage from 12.30pm on every day of the tournament.

Tennis stars Michael Stich, Pat Cash, Annabel Croft, Frew McMillan and Tracy Austin return and Five Live newcomer Judy Murray – former Scottish No.1, national coach and mother of up-and-coming tennis star Andy – also joins the team.

John McEnroe once again makes star appearances on Five Live as he presents Six-Love-Six on the Wednesday of the first week of Wimbledon (28 June) and the Thursday of the second (6 July), during which listeners can share their thoughts on the tournament with the mild-mannered host.

To accommodate the World Cup final and Wimbledon men's final both being played on Sunday 9 July, Five Live's busy day of sport starts at 1.30pm as Clare Balding reports live from Wimbledon with Mark Pougatch bringing listeners the football from Munich.

Jonathan Overend, with Michael Stich and Pat Cash, begins commentary of the Wimbledon final from 2.00pm before handing over the reigns to Mark Pougatch and Graham Taylor in Munich at 6pm as the build up to the World Cup final begins. Alan Green and Mike Ingham commentate on the action live from 7pm.

Judy Murray says: "I'm really looking forward to working on Five Live during Wimbledon. They always have great coverage of the Championships and it's an opportunity for me to talk tennis with some top journalists!"
