Plain Advice Limited, a marketing consultancy born and bred in Yorkshire, have launched a series of short video podcasts that will build into a complete guide to giving effective and memorable presentations.

“Presenting is a bit like driving”, said Chris Bell, company founder and Chief Sensible Officer, “Lots of people do it every day and most of them assume that they are pretty good at it. Our experience and our research shows that this simply isn't the case.”

Plain Advice recently conducted a web-based survey to understand how presentations are given and how they are received by their audiences. Almost 700 people from the UK, Europe and the US responded from industries such as IT, healthcare, marketing, manufacturing and education. The results showed that 80% of respondents thought that most of the presentations they saw were 'boring or a waste of time', with most people citing “reading from slides” as the most common mistake presenters make.

“We found the results of our survey so distressing that we had to act quickly to help people avoid the most basic mistakes”, said Bell. “Presentations are just about the most primal form of marketing their is. It is extremely rare to get the opportunity to see the whites of your customer's eyes as you deliver your messages. To waste an opportunity like this seems almost criminally negligent.”

The video podcast series is designed to build into a complete audio visual guide to delivering effective and memorable presentations. Viewers can subscribe to an RSS feed or use iTunes to have each instalment synchronised directly to their iPod, allowing them to improve their communication skills while on the train or at the airport.
